I got a phone call from the service dept. of my stealership and they said i had an appointment for an oil change comign up. I was like
and said i didnt call for one. They proceeded to tell me that the dealer makes it for the customer on their first oild change required after first 1k miles on new cars.
I asked, "do they also pay for it?" she said no that it is $20 or $23. I forgot which.
Does this sound right??? first oil change after 1k miles?!?!??!?! i BREIFLY looked at my manual and it said 3500 miles for first servicing.

A lot of people recommend changing the oil on a new car between the first 500 to 1000 miles. This way, after your "break in" period, you car starts out with fresh oil. I've never heard of a dealer suggesting it, but that particular service department probably believes in it.

I say take it in. Look, it's only $20, and this way they can't give you any grief regarding service issues in the future. Seems a little soon to me, but wtf?
I think my dealership recommended that on my 2001 Civic also.

Your attitude is quite generous, Kenny. But I suspect that the service department in question has less altruistic motives than you give them credit for having.Originally posted by KennyLau

Get your dealership to put their "recommendation" in writing, Domo Kun. When you get it (or should I say, IF you get it), I'll tell you how to run it by Nissan North America. We'll see what NNA has to say.

Regardless of a dealer's motives, common sense and real world experience from members here suggest 10 to 12k as the actual break-in time for a VQ. Changing oil at 1k is a wise move as well. Then doing 3 or 4 3k intervals with a conventional oil and quality filter (that means not Fram) is a good start to ensuring 200k+ life out of the engine and consistent performance.Originally posted by y2kse

yeah, we dont have break in oil... and the *oil* may be good for 3000 miles.. but its a good idea to change the filter early, like at 1k or so. And why change the filter without oil.
Required? no Necessary? not really.. Cheap Insurance if you plan to own the car to 100K+? Yep...

Thanks for all your answers, i'll do it because it will only cost me $23 and about 30-60 minutes of my life.
oddly enough after having the car for a month, i only have like 550 miles on it. they expected i would have 900-1000 by then.
