WTF happen to the value
WTF happen to the value
While reading a few posts I saw someone asking about the value of a 2000 Black SE, 15,500 miles, which is what I have, Loaded down and imaculately taken care of...
Price range from $10.000 to $13.000
What the *** is going on? $15.000 loss in two years!!!
I think I made a huge mistake!
Can this be right?

Re: WTF happen to the value
If you would like to sell your 2000 Black SE, 15,500 miles, Loaded down and imaculately taken care of, for 10-13k, PM me. I will buy it. (I'm serious.) However, that being said, remember it's a car, not a house. If resale was a HUGE concern, ya shoulda bought a Honda.

I got that price from Edmonds and Kelly BB
I never said resale was a HUGE concern, but seems a little excessive, Don't you think?
Honda? are you drunk?
I was thinking along the lines of a BMW or Lexus
well, I think it would be worth closer to 15K+ on a private sale. Those are trade-in values. You always get ripped at trade in.
Actually... if you look at a TL, which was 31K, its selling for 22K-ish.
OK.. my max was 26K now worth 15-6K
the TL at the time was 31K now worth 22K
I've lost 11K, they've lost 9K.
a $2,000 hit is not the worst finacial decision ever. Its not great and you can get upset... but its really 600 more per yer.
Comparing retail KBB
the 2000 max is pretty close to an Accord EX 6cyl. There was only $1000 difference in price at the time. Now they fetch about $1000 more equally equipped. again, not that painful.

Resale
I think the resale on the Maxima has been dropping so fast due to the drastic changes over the last couple of years. Who is going to buy your car for 19K @ 222hp when they can get a new maxima for a little over 20K @ 255hp. Hondas resale value is better because they redo their line up less frequently and drastically.
Re: Re: Re: WTF happen to the value
Yep, Honda. And no, I'm not drunk...yet.
For resale, it's hard to beat a Honda. Very hard.

Don't worry, I'll be buzzin' by 5.
I agree. Honda might have good resale value, but if I have to take a hit in resale, and drive a Max over an Accord, I'm taking the hit. My Max is twice the car my Accord was, and 10x the car our Civic is. (I can't stand driving that freakin' thing.

It's common sense but some people just don't realize that nada and kbb values are just numbers. They don't take in account drastic model changes, bad economic conditions, flood of used and leased vehicles, 0% financing, manufacturers rebates, etc... Bottom line, your vehicle is only worth what a buyer is willing to pay for it. As a trade-in value, a good indicator would be the going auction price for similar vehicles.
I sold my 2k maxima 2 months ago with 39,000 miels on it for 17,800. It didnt have leather or anything. it was an automatic. I bought it that year before for 19,500. I didnt lose too much money. if you were to sell your car I bet that you can get 18 for it,or more.
Consumer Reports rates the depreciation on Maxima's as "AVERAGE"
If you want to talk about bad resale, just look at any 3 year old domestic car. Literally worth almost nothing. Accords are better. The Maxima is average. The Taurus is MUCH WORSE than average.
A 1999-2000 Volvo S70 T5 fully loaded sold for upper-$30k range. But because everybody wants used BMW/Audi/MB cars and not Volvo's, Volvo's resale is in the sh!tter too. You can get these cars now, only 2-3 years old, for around $20k with low mileage! $15-18k depreciation in only 2-3 years. Now THAT is BAD!
But this makes them AWESOME deals used, just like the Maxima.
This has seriously got me thinking. If I could ever find an S70 T5 with a 5spd I might seriously consider it. Hmm...mod the Maxima or get a T5 and up the boost

The only way to buy a Max is to buy it used. (sorry for those of you who cant wait)....
Semi loaded new 2k2....25K
Semi loaded 2K...... 12.5K
Semi loaded 2k2 in two years... 12.5K
You can just about buy a 2k now and a 2k2 in two years for the price that you can buy a brand new 2k2/3 now. Do you want one car or two?
As a used car, the Maxima is THE deal in all of the car world.

That would still put a 2k SE at about half its original price.....

Show me where you can get a semi-loaded 2k for $12.5 that has normal miles and is in good condition. The depreciation on a $25-26k car would be $5.5-6k the first year, then about $1.5-2k per year for the next four years. That is why I think it is best to find a low mileage 1 year old Max that has taken the big hit in depreciation already.

In the past I have had bad luck with used cars..( I'm sure most on the board have experienced this at least once)
Anyway i love the car...I would park it in the house if I could.

Good Luck on that one Huh, Found a M5 for $ 57,000 OUCH!
I will have to sell a Sht load of blood!
well, the car that Budget has was selling for 18.5 when I got my 2k, so I am not too worried that 2k GXE's are 12-ish now.
Also, you know, even if you have to pay alittle in the long run, isnt it worth it *NOT* to have to drive a Honda?

While the Maxima has average resale value, keep in mind the effect of 0% financing on 1- and 2-yr-old vehicles. There is a glut of vehicles on the used car market because of all the incentives floating around for new car sales. Even the typically strong resale value in the truck market has been affected. Recently, I've looked into trading my '01 F-150 Supercrew 4x4 XLT for a family vehicle (SUV or mini-van) and found out it has lost a lot of value. I paid $31.8k, it was stickered over $36k, and the trade in is only $22k. That kind of loss just means I'll keep the truck a bit longer than I want. Oh well, at least it can haul my motorcycle
.
For ****s and giggles I checked my '02 Maxima SE (a leftover I purchased in June or July of this year) and found it's trade-in value was around $17-19k. I'm not trading it until I get out of law school in four years so, it really doesn't matter. In the meantime, I need to find some ways to tune it's handling without sacrificing ride quality or recucing it's driveability in this fickle mid-west weather (snow, ice, rain, etc.).
