97 Eclipse GS-T manual VS 2k2 Maxima Auto ( close race)

On a saturday my buddy and I were coming back from a club. He just bough a 97 eclipse GS-T and wanted to race me. We had 6 or 7 runs.

1st run I had a really bad take off I spun my tires for a long time and before I got traction he was already 2 cars in front of me. I cought up to him at 70 and had him by a car by 90.

2nd run I had a real good take off this time and beat him by 2 cars and shut it down at 100.

3rd run bad take off again i did not catch up to him untill 90 and we shut it down at 125. I only had him by 1/2 car.

4th run dont even ask, he beat me by a car ( real bad take off)
5th and 6th I beat him by 1 1/2 cars.
I did not honestly think that the damn eclipse would give me any trouble. Even though I beat him I never pulled away from him that fast. He was right on my a$$ in every race, he could not believe either that his car actually was close to my max. I have to give that lil car some props.

Yes auto and u r right the 6 speed would be faster, but my point is that even with auto I should still be able to beat him by more than i did.

RS, GS, and GS-T are all FWD. GS-X is AWD.
GS-T's and GS-X's are something to watch out for, you never know what mods have been done to the turbo. The other trims are a joke.

Back in the mid-90's, many of the car mags showed the GS-T with 0-60 times in the mid to high 6's, usually about 6.6-6.8. That would be about right compared to what you found out. They often found that the FWD GS-T was quicker than the GSX...mostly because the AWD added about 150-175 extra pounds. Because the car was a four cylinder turbo with lag, it never really had a big problem with traction off the line so the AWD wasn't necessary to keep the thing planted to the ground.

I had a '91 Galant VR-4 (new back then) that was basically a GSX in 4 door form. They were surprising quick cars (195hp).

GST= FWD GSX=RWD

Was the GST stock? If it was those things are slow slow slow stock. I had a 99 GSX and it was sooooo slow from a roll. The turbo is a Garrett T-25 which is very small and very inefficient (ie blows hot air at high boost >17psi) at which point the ECU retards timing dramatically. Those cars' ECU's are very sensitive to knock. A buddy of mine put race gas in his Eclipse and beat me bye about 10 lengths when before he only beat me by about 3. If you swap out the turbo for something bigger like a 16g or a Garret hybrid, and add intake, exhuast and fuel modifications, bye bye Maxima.

actually the eclipse was stock he only had real light rims and bad a$$ tires from his previous car (300ZX). I wouldnt say that they r slow cause he gave me some challenge, ulike the hondas. I was very surprised that this car can pull that hard for a four banger. That car has 205hp and is a lot lighter than the max. Manual helps him get off the line since his turbo doesnt turn on untill 2500rpm. I still beat him though but not by a lot. BTW a kill is a kill

Oh I wasn't trying to downplay your victory at all. A kill over anything turbo is always good! Eclipses have alot of potential but the conditions have to be right. To be honest, I luv my Max more than my old GSX. Can't wait for my Y-pipe to get here!

Okay...

This is a little O/T, but I have a question. Do you and your buddy live like 100 miles from the "club"? The only reason I ask, is because I'm a little curious where you race, up to 125 mph (several times), on your way back from the club. ???????????????????

good kill!!!

max doesn't weight too much more
02 max se weighs in at 3274 lbs and the 97 eclipse gs-t is 2900 lbs. he didn't have a convertible did he?? he would weigh in around 3053 lbs if he had a convertible gs-t.

did you manually shift from 1 to 2 to 3 or did you just leave it in 3 or D??
