catalytic converter

i have a 2k SE auto
recently it been making loud noises and the accleration really suxs..
and few days ago, engine service light poped on. so i took it to some local shop (not nissan dealership) he plug some mini comp thingy into my car, and it said that my "catalytic converter" was messed up.. he reset my service engine light and told me to drive for about 2 days.. and if light goes on again.. bring it back to them.
i asked him how much it would it cost to fix it or get a new 1.
he told me it can't be fix, i need to get a new 1.. and told me the price was anywhere between 600-800 bucks..
i kinda thought he was trying to rip me off there.. so i went on custommaxima and looked around and fround this
http://www.custommaxima.com/RandomTech.htm
now for about 200 bucks, i think thats more like it
my question is, is that the thing i need? if i change my Catalytic connverter do i need to get the whole catman catback exuast?
beacause as of now, i dont need to spend too much money =(..
and if get the installion kit.. do you guys think i can do it my self?
i nvr done anything with engine or under the hood work, besides change a few oil filters... so in other words, iam a newbie =)

Re: catalytic converter

ask him wat the code was. there is a ECU reprogram to fix one of the code.

if u have to change it....
u can always change the cat urself or ask around the forum that who will do it for u.

here is a link tells u why a cat fails and has pictures to show all kinds dead cat.

ok....before u change ur cat.
do a search here on oxygen sensor and catalytic convertor. ur case might be the ECU reprogram. u have to go to dealer for the re-program and usually local shop does not know about TSB or anything. check the TSB sticky thread...it might have somethign similar to ur case.

Re:

wut do you mean by the ECU reprogram? do i just walk in the dealer and ask them to do it?
and do you know where i can buy a o2 censor? i think the damn shop is gonna rip me off again.. i think i should change the o2 censor before i change the cat, so it wont screw that up..
