Ok, so here's a question...

You land a new job that nets you 6 figures, which is a hell ov o lot more than you were netting. What do you do with your 2k2 max??? You're now taking in enough $$ to afford a ride up to $60k....

Do you:

Keep the max and mod it out? (save $$ and buy a boat or something..)

Or sell the max and get one of the following dream cars:
G35 coupe
Audi S6 avant
BMW M3
Volvo S60R (2003 model)
Saleen Mustang/Mustang Cobra

We all love our maxes...but how true are you to them???

Personally i'd take the M3 or an SVT cobra :P (from those you suggested)

Unless you can afford an RS6

Sell me your max for about $3 and buy a G35 coupe.

No seriously, I'd see what your cash flow looks like first. Play it safe. If its not already paid for, pay off the max in about 3 to 4 months, then save money for a good down payment. Buy a G35 coupe, and have fun with the max. Or mod the G35 and daily drive the max. Either way, with the 6 figures, you can't loose. Just wait a little while and watch the cash flow first.

Keep the Max and pay it off quickly, while you research and compare cars you like and cars that are coming out soon. Pay off any other debt you have.

I'd keep the max, and develop a turbo kit so my .org buddies could get turbos cheaper. Then I'd probably get an X5 4.4.

Depends,

Do you have a wife or kids? Do you want to drive your dream car everday, or would you rather have a daily driver and drive your dream car less frequently? Can you afford the max and one of your dream cars?

By the way my choices are M3 or Cobra Mustang. Being that the mustang is significantly cheaper perhaps you could keep the max also.

The best car you can get for under $60K is a BMW 540i 6-speed. Buy it.

How about you just save the money you make and enjoy the 2K2 Maxima. It's really not that bad of a car.

You go to your Mitsubishi dealer and put a deposit on a Lancer EVO VIII. Wait eagerly for its arrival. When it comes mod the hell out of it and daily drive the Max.

I would just keep the cash for other stuff. Pay the max out quicker (prolly within a year) and enjoy life. A car is not the only place to put money.

Plus, as many of us know, that 6 fig job could be gone next month. Then you are really taking it up the yang.

Take some of that cash and hold it. Enjoy life with the rest. after a year or so hopefully the economy will ride out and then you will feel safe with your new cash. Then make your move.

Just my .02

Cool replies. Hey, I never said that *I* got a new job...just a thought.

Ever since I was 12, I've wanted a Saleen....my tastes have changed, but that boyhood dream is still in there somewhere. God I love cars...way too much!

Re: A really tough question...new car?

If I had a job that nets me 6-figures, I'd seriously consider what else I can do with the extra money before having thoughts of getting rid of my Maxima and going with a dreamier car.

I got my Maxima so that my girlfriend would have a nice car to drive around, and then when we got the Sentra SE-R, she went with that instead since she likes the smaller car. But we also have a nice house together, so we have to work toward getting more money into that for more furniture, paying off non-stop bills, and lots more stuff.

My next dream car is the G35 Coupe. For my girlfriend, I'd love to buy her a BMW 5-series machine. But that's just me.

If you don't have to worry about those kinds of things, then I'd say go with a nicer car. Sell your Maxima to someone who would take care of her, and feel good about it.

Peace.

If all you can afford is something up to 60K, I would just wait an extra year or less and get a M5. Luxury + Speed = Anyones kind of car.

It's all about personal taste though, if you want to mod the hell out of your maxima and still feel the bumps in the road, it's your call. If you want to buy a M5 and you live in the NY/NJ area and want to risk it getting stolen, it's your call.

By the way, if anyone here has a M5 and lives in this area...please let me drive it. I am a licensed driver now.

whatever it is, do it quickly... I'd pay off the Max as fast as possible (take all the "extra" money each month and put it toward the payoff) then pay off all the debts (credit cards, etc).

then BEFORE YOU (or whomever) GETS USED TO THE EXTRA MONEY make a decision. I guarantee if you (or whomever) goes 3 or 4 months, you'll *find* ways to spend the extra money and all the sudden you'll find yourself back in the same situation... "not enough money to ..."

I went from teaching high school (less than $22k/year) to this situation overnight. It's amazing how I got by on $22k (that's before taxes, too) but now that I've had the new job about a year, I have the exact same amount of "extra cash" month-to-month as I did tens-of-thousands of dollars ago.

Keep the Maxima so you don't get slammed on depreciation. Remember, you aren't getting one big six figure check, then put as much money as you can legally into a pre-tax retirement account annually (profit sharing, 401k, etc). By the time you are 45 or 50, you will be able to retire with a HUGE nest egg. Trust me on this one. A little sacrifice now will net you big returns later

I'd actually keep the car.

people think im wierd bceause i always tell people that i'll be the only CEO driving a modded 30 grand car......hehe, instead of driving the benzes and bimmers....

personally, i like modding, and there is nothing in the world (other than women) i lik better than making my car different from other cars.

however.......the maxima is quite a classy car to many people...if not classy, it is for sure respectable and I wouldn't be rushing out to get a new car.

Use your extra money to pay off your debts first...then, MAYBE...MAYBE get an M3

I used to think given this situation (new job, lottery) that I would go for the M3, but I've read alot of bad stuff about BMW's and M3's specifically.

Apparently, M3's are blowing engines left right and centre. I went to one site that had close to 100 different owners with blown engines. It appears to be problematic. On top of this, I've been reading quite a bit about the lack of reliability on the BMW. 7 series owners (previous gen) were plagued with electrical problems. 3 series owners have had lots of little nigglies and electric motor failures (windows, sunroof). So, I'm starting to think BMW would not be in my future.

I am very seriously considering the G35C as my next car right now. Performance reported in the mags is a little dissapointing so far, but other than that its really nice car.

I might wait a bit to see what the new Supra is like, the new S4 appears to be interesting, and the Lexus IS430 (if it gets off the ground) is also interesting. Honda is supposed to be working on an S2000 type-R which if freakin phenomenal (340 hp inline 6).

Otherwise, the Z06 Corvette is a very interesting car. I've personally never really liked Corvettes at all, but from what I've read the Z06 is a world class sports car. It will out-accelerate a 911 Turbo, out-handle a Ferrari and generally kick-butt.

My wife's uncle is a very successful business man who races for fun. He used to race Porches, then got a C5 Corvette. He regularly kicks german/italian *** with his "unrefined" sports car. Worth a look.

Yeah I can't wait for those neat little R models of Honda to start poppin' out. Those are the only Hondas I'd ever buy.
Lancer EvoIII and Imprezia STi S202 there gonna be big!

buy three cars:

1. daily driver... nice interior, comfortable ride, gets good gas mileage but costs under $10K. Must be reliable.

2. weekend toy. Fast, fun, and makes you grin to drive it. This is the car you take to the clubs or places to valet park it. This can be around $30K and under.

3. race car. aka, the money pit. This is the vehicle that you take to the track and abuse the crap out of it. $20K or less (used or new).

Forget the M5, M3, saleen, etc. The day someone keys the car, the day you get rear-ended, the day you find a dent in it, the day you find the rock chips in it....those are the days you regret buying one.

I like the idea of keeping the Maxima as an everyday driver, and buying something (not necessarily an EVO) and modding it...what about buying a 1970 240Z and restoring it? That would be fun...or...just wait, and get a Twin Turbo 3.5 Infiniti...will that come in GT-R form or in the G35? If that G35...as good as it looks, comes with a Twin Turbo, I may end up trading in my 03 6 speed Maxima for it...that thing is beautiful..

I would pay off my Max, mod it to taste and wait eagerly for the Nissan/Infiniti GT-R (Skyline, USA style!). If that didn't pan out, or the car was significantly different than what is rumored, I would look into a BMW M3 or the Saleen (I too have wanted one since I was 12-13 and I have a friend with a Camaro Z28 that he is steadily modding that I would love to beat...). Bottom line, I would try very hard to wait and see what comes down the road...

Doc...congrats and my two cents: Back home

in Puerto Rico and already knowing I would be relocating to Oregon I gnashed my teeth for weeks on the decision of what to do with my 540...selling it there or bringing it into the US -which I was going to have relo/shipping paid for anyway.

The teeth-gnashing was primarily due to the fact that Oregon traffic is slow (really slow) ergo would a 540 just be overkill here.

In the end I had a reasonable offer in PR & sold it there and having been here for just over a year now I dont regret that decision...the 540 is a wonderful car -but for Oregon driving it's just too much.

An M3 is nice but too small for me...if I had my druthers (and the moolah) I would wait until 2004 for the replacement to the current E39 540 to be available..rumor has it that it will be 300-400 lighter than the E39 & have an option of a 3.5 liter V8 or roughly 270 HP...if that's true it will have a power/weight ratio close to the current 540 but with better mileage, etc...

Good luck
