I would do as several others have suggested. Pay off your Maxima and keep it. I don't think that cars are really the best way to invest money. Buy real estate instead. And on the subject of BMWs...they look so good when they are new, but after a couple of years, the look outdated (more so than other lux cars).
I assume you aren't still living in your Maxima, down by the river...
First:
Pay off ALL debts other than car & house.
Second:
Become a home owner...with a garage.
Third:
Own A car, ANY car outright.
Max out 401K savings and set up an IRA AND a ROTH IRA, save, save, save!
Fourth:
Shop around and buy the dream car that fits your budget and taste. It is not about what others like, it is all about you. Just do not buy on credit. If cheap speed (1/4 mile for about $10K) is your thing then buy a GSXR-1000, not a car. A GSXR will go from 0 to 100mph and back to 0 faster than any production car made anywhere will even hit the 100mph mark. Cheap speed indeed!!
My choices are obvious...see the sig...
I will put my $22,000 FWD family sedan against any other FWD family sedan (under $30K) any day of the week and blow it away. Likewise, I will take my $46,000 RWD two-seater, with 350hp, and put it against any other car under $55K (maybe more) and the same damn thing will happen...although the new Cobra may very well be a contender...not sure yet. But I HATE Fords, so I personally would NEVER buy one. I had one, and it was a miracle if it went more than two weeks without needing something fixed.
Maybe someday I would buy an M-3 or M-5, I may trade the Maxima for a 330xi soon...not sure. Shopping and day dreaming is half the fun. Enjoy the wait and be proud of the acheivement.

You driving your Vette
and I'll drive a 2002 Miata. I betcha i win.
or even a "slower" 2002 MR-S.

but, yes, thread author... pay off your debts. That's probably the best thing. That will eventually give you more money to work with in the long run.
even though it's tough especially when you want something that you can have...
Most of the advise has been good here, paying off all current debt...
But if money became a nonissue, like hitting a big lotto pay out, I think I would still keep the Max. My weekend car, lol the rest of your life would be a weekend, would be a McLaren F1

Dr Volk,
I'd keep the Max for Winter use and buy a superblack 2003 Infinti M45 and put an Impul body kit/suspension kit on it, maybe supercharge it as well.
Have any of you ever seen those?
Its almost like the BatMobile except Batman grew up and made it a sedan.
Very unique, edgy yet elegant, very fast and still about 60 k including mods.

My personal debt exceeds income, so, yes, that would be the best thing to take car of. (8 years of school will do that)
My max would not make a good winter car...the tires spin in the rain, forget about snow.
I think I'll keep the max, mod it up a little, and somewhere down the line buy a used sporty car of some sort...or, as someone else pointed out, sit and wait for the skyline to hit these shores.
Just sucks, my max is a totally stripped SE...with just a sunroof, so I was looking for a little more bling, but oh well...maybe I can get leather put in it or something in a year or so.

Dr Volk,
Your Max looks awesome though.
Leather(once you have that in there) and Sunroof is all a car needs anyway to be hi-end.
Fred...

PS: Did you just finish your residency?

Ok, so here's a question...
You land a new job that nets you 6 figures, which is a hell ov o lot more than you were netting. What do you do with your 2k2 max??? You're now taking in enough $$ to afford a ride up to $60k....
Do you:
Keep the max and mod it out? (save $$ and buy a boat or something..)
Or sell the max and get one of the following dream cars:
G35 coupe
Audi S6 avant
BMW M3
Volvo S60R (2003 model)
Saleen Mustang/Mustang Cobra
We all love our maxes...but how true are you to them???
