Apexi S-AFC install and tune
I successfully installed the Apexi this weekend, took about 2 hours (many thanks to Kev's ECU wiring diagram: http://boostedmaximas.com/ecu_pins.jpg).
Install:
Unplug the negative of the car battery. Step on the brake a few times to purge remaining electricity.
Access the ECU by taking off the small black cover-plate, located low on the passenger side of the center console (where a passenger's left foot would be while sitting in the car).
Take off the loom protector, and pull the black level to unplug the ECU harness. Unwrap the black protections tape from the wires to give yourself some room to work. I was able to tap onto the wires, and complete all connections, in about 1 hour, per the ECU diagram link above.
Plug the ECU harness back in. Put the black tape back on the wires to protect them, or replace with any electrical tape. (I was not able to get the wire loom protector back on.) Put the black panel back on.
Mounting:
Run your Apexi extension wire towards your mounting location. Plug into wire coming out of Apexi and mount the unit. I used sticky back velcro, and mounted it immediately in front of my RPM gauge (The Apexi has one, so I don't need my stock RPM). It may sound ghetto; but you can't see the velcro, wires run up steering column (totally hidden), and I am able to pull it off and hide the Apexi if I'm in a bad neighborhood. Finally, hide extra wire under the dash somewhere.
Put the car's ground back on. Turn the key to the on position, but don't start the car. The Apexi should light up. Following the directions to get to the different settings.
Settings:
Took about 10 minutes: 6 cylinder, arrow up; hotwire 4in/4out.
High throttle 40%/Low throttle 39%.
Then set your RPM ranges to: 1000, 3500, 4000, 4500, 5000, 5500, 6000, 6500.
Correction Factors*:
Corrections factors will differ by car.
The ONLY way to tune it is on the dyno.**
*NOTE: The car will not be hurt by NOT setting these immediately. The car will run w/ zero correction, or as normal, until these are set.
**NOTE: Only adjust the high throttle correction factors, leave low throttle alone (the ECU will override them).
Initial Results: When I first started the car, I got a SEL, and it died 4 times. But, then it started up, and I took it to my buddy's shop to reset the SEL. Everything has been running perfectly since.
Tuning: I went Monday and tuned my A/F, to a perfectly straight line @ 12.9-it was beautiful! I gained about 5 FWHP peak, and a couple HP throughout most of the RPM range.
I was told (by Kev) I'll gain a few more once I adjust and run leaner n/a (13.3ish). So, I'll give it a test and see.
Then, I'll tune my nitrous curve, when the new jets come, to a "near" flat 12.25-12.5ish. With the addition of my bottle warmer, and the Apexi tuning I hope to gain an additional 15FWHP on the juice.
