NJ Drivers License, NY points.
NJ Drivers License, NY points.
I recently lost a case involving a speeding ticket acquired in NY (SI) to be specific. It is 6 points. Does anyone know if these points will carry over to my NJ drivers license? Will I see it in my insurance? Any information would be appreciated. Thanx.

about 2 min before). The cop had his gun drawn and was cursing over the loud speaker! Pretty funny looking back (it was years ago).Anywho, the whole thing cost me like $300. I just paid the ticket, and never heard about it again. I've also got out of a few tickets in my day by delaying the court date and hoping the cop didn't show. I've made up more family members dying than I have. HA HA HA!! Good luck!
I know in NY State that as long as you promptly pay the fine, you needn't worry about points on your NJ license. However, I'm not certain about NYC (though I don't think those points will show up on your record either, I'm not sure).
Just out of curiosity, where'd you speed: Rt440 (WSE), I-278 (SIE) or was it on a street?
Sidenote: Don't you miss the days before Guliani became mayor where you could totally fly through NYC without fear of a speeding ticket.
(Great mayor but to much into the traffic enforcement thing.)

Unfortunately, I plead not guilty and delayed the court date for as long as possible (a friend of mine told me that you could do that because it was NY), but I could only postpone two times. Then I had to go. Either way, I lost. Anybody have any opinions about this? Thanx.

and holy $hit, 6 points? what the hell did you do to get that many points??
I did 21 over the speed limit. I find it a little ridiculous since the street has 4 lanes on each side, but hey I don't make the laws, apparently I just break them. Does anyone know how I can find out if it really does transfer over? I love the stories that people tell, but I kind of need some confirmation. Thanx.

Well, as I said before, I already went to court, and lost. Paid whatever the court said, and now just have to see if it goes on my record. According to what everyone is saying, looks like I will be seeing those points.

The NYSDMV does not record out-of-state violations committed by NYS drivers in other jurisdictions. The exceptions are alcohol-related violations, drug-related violations, and moving violations committed in Quebec or Ontario. Under special agreements, traffic convictions in Quebec or Ontario are recorded on NYS driver license records and carry points. Except for violations in Ontario and Quebec, points are not added to your NYS record for out-of-state violations.

OK, let's make this real simple...re-read his post.
Damon in a NJ driver who got a ticket in NY, the link you posted pertains to NY drivers in other jurisdictions.
OK. I know this may sound stupid, but I am going to explain what HAS happened already and please just answer in the simplest possible way.
I got a speeding ticket in Staten Island for doing 21 over the speed limit. I have a NJ Drivers License. I postponed the hearing twice and went to the third appointed date. I lost the case and had to pay $130. According to the DMV there, 21 mph over the speed limit is 6 points. Will I see this on my NJ insurance or NJ Drivers License.
Sorry for me being so stupid, I just want to make absolutely sure. Thanx again.

He may be able to read, but knowing what to read is a different matter:
"Interstate Compacts
New Jersey belongs to two Interstate Compacts. Member states exchange information to ensure driver compliance with the law and that they receive penalties for violations.
The Nonresident Violator Compact assures nonresident motorists in member states they'll receive the same treatment as resident motorists. When drivers receive traffic citations in member states, they must fulfill the terms of that citation or face the possibility of license suspension in their home state until they meet those terms. Nonresident drivers have due process protection and cannot be detained out of state. Currently, 44 states and the District of Columbia are members of the compact. Alaska, California, Michigan, Montana, Oregon and Wisconsin are nonmembers. The compact doesn't apply to parking or standing violations, highway weight limit violations and violations of Hazmat transportation laws.
The National Driver License Compact exchanges violation information with other states and the District of Columbia. Out-of-state violations become part of your NJ driving record. Georgia, Massachusetts, Michigan, Tennessee and Wisconsin are nonmember states."

Yes, they do. As you pointed out, correctly, a NY licensed driver will not get points from most out of state tickets, including NJ. BUT, a NJ license driver will suffer from the NY ticket, in terms of points. Occaisionally, though, some tickets get "lost in the shuffle, and the NJ driver is OK. But NJ does take NY tickets. The points will probably show up on your record.

now damon41978,
going 21 mph over the limit in NJ is only a 4 point ticket i believe, so if anything i think they would tansfer the 4 points and not the 6 points.
