with 35,800 miles on my car....
Nissan refuses to replace my starter...
Every few starts, it grinds horribly...
So with 200 mi left on my warranty I bring my car in for service...
Of course they tell me "we failed to duplicate the problem at this time"...
Couldnt pick the car up until after they closed so I couldnt even shove my size 16 up the guys as s....
Kinda ****ed, is there anything I can do?
Need to get this car 100% before I get rid of it.

My dealer honored the window seals on my old Altima because I reported it at 32K. They were unable to determine what the problem was until 39K. They fixed it- no questions asked.

I've had this problem with my 2k1 GXE 5 speed also, but I think I figured out how it happens... If you dont have the clutch ALL the way in when you try to start it, it does that. So just try to have the clutch all the way in, not 95% of the way. But I don't think its anything wrong with the starter.

Got the same problem on my 2k1 GXE Auto. After many responses that they could not duplicate the problem, they replaced something called a crank angle sensor on my car. It did absolutely nothing. I took it back, and they said that they couldn't duplicate the problem. I've given up on them. Nissan service sucks. The car did it in their lot as I was leaving, and the guy ran out with the computer and said nothing was wrong. He even heard the grinding but said nothing was wrong because his little computer told him so. Bah. If anyone finds out what's causing this on a lot of our cars, please, enlighten all of us.

might not be...
your starter, it is probably some damaged or worn teeth on your flywheel. THe starter gears are meshing with f'ed up teeth and making that sound, once they turn past, the car starts up fine. It will be random depending where the flywheel is when the car stops.
Keep documenting, and try another dealer. If it happens more than infrequently, they should eventually get it to do it with a few start/stops..
