6 Speed Question

Can anyone with a 2K2 or 2K3 6 speed tell me if their transmission makes a "whining" sound when the car slows down (speedwise) from a high rev situation while in 2nd gear? Thanks!

when I rav my 2nd gear to around 4000rpm and let go the gas..I think there is a whine noise. But it really didn't sound like something was broken.

Its almost like on my friends Acura Integra, it sounded like that when he goes in reverse backing out of my driveway. It sounds pretty nice.

But why do you ask?

sounds like the recall

You sound like you probably need the clutch plate recall. I, along with a few others, had a problem where disengaging the clutch would make a whining noise when it was warm. This turns out to be a problem with a bearing on the clutch plate. Once I reproduced the sound, Nissan agreed to replace it. The sound is not that hard to make. Some people before me offered some good advice. Take the car to a small hit and ride the clutch up and down the hill till the noise happens. It only takes a little bit to get the clutch warm this way. Hope this helps.

I'm sorry, I should have been more descriptive. I just had my flywheel, clutch disc, pressure plate and throw out bearing replaced by the dealer. This work was done to correct the "squeeling" noise which could be heard when starting up a hill in 1st gear and to correct a chatter condition in the clutch assembly.

Now that I've gotten the car back, I've noticed a mechanical whining from the tranny on deceleration while in gear. It is most noticable during a 4th to 2nd downshift while braking. It is truly a "whining" sound.

Do you guys get this too?

MiniRX7,

Thanks for the feedback. I'm sorry you don't like the 6 speed. Actually I'm quite happy with it. I agree that the shifts are kinda long, but I do like the overall feel of the stick. I also feel that the gearing is pretty good overall. When the car was new, I had a lot of trouble adjusting to the clutch. I can tell you that the new clutch is a night and day difference compared to the original. The pressure plate is distinctly stiffer and it the clutch disc has a much more immediate "grab" on engagement.

As far as the whining, I just couldn't recall if the tranny always made that sound. It is re-assuring to know that other 6 speeds do that too.

Have you changed your tranny fluid or is it OEM? Thanks for the response . . .

I have the same noise in my car through 1st and 2nd gear. I do think it was normal since my brother 96 civic ex made the same noise on the lower gears. It doesn't sound like it's hurting anything just reving down. Thats my feeling at least.

I have a 2k3 6 spd and am wondering what whining noise you guys are talking about. This is my third manual car and each car whined when decelarating in the lower gears. Maybe I am wrong but I think this is normal. I just thought this was contributed to the enging braking (on manuals). Like I said, I could be wrong.

Ok, seems to me that everything is normal with my tranny. Everyone is experiencing the same whining noise, just like the Hondas and Acuras make, while slowing down in first and second. I was only concerned because I'd never noticed the noise before (even though it was probably there all along) until after the dealer did the clutch job. Sorry for getting everyone concerned. It seems to be normal.

However, there is actually a TSB for the clutch disc itself. This TSB can be found on the Altima message board. Someone posted the link up about 2-3 weeks ago. The TSB details how to replace the disc, but also describes how to align the flywheel with the crankshaft . . . Do a search, it should probably come up.
