Best Bang-for-Buck '03 Mod???

Name just one mod that is considered to give the most performance improvement for the least amount of cash. Remember, it's for a 2003SE!

I don't really think an RSB will make any improvement in performance, unless you group suspension/handling together in the same catagory as performance upgrades, which none of the retailers do. Any other suggestions?

BTW, the best bang for buck suspension/handling mod would not be a RSB mod, for around $160. I think $240 is better spent on stiffer/lower springs, and then RSB and others. So there...

Based on the list only the CAI or some kind of intake would suit your need for now.

Btw, for $240 i'd say get some Maxspeed springs and an Addco RSB and you're set at least in that department.

I voted on what you listed, but I agree 100% with what others have said. Addco RSB should be at least a 2nd mod if not 1st. This is the cheapest best performance mod for the buck you can get.

The Y-Pipe and the UDP are the only ones that will give you any real power gains. Don't let them tell you CAI will, it's minimal if any.

rsb! other mods may give u more power, but given that u'r starting out with 255hp, i'd say improve handling 1st. rsb-$115(addco)+ maxspeed springs-$109-$120 shipped = $235 of improved performanced-handling.

So your saying the CAI will give less gains than the UDP???? I beg to differ there are plenty of dynos that prove the intakes give between 6-10 whp and the UDP will give maybe 1-2 and cost more. I have both and will tell anybody that my injen if you like it of not gave a hell of a lot more power than my UR UDP. Y pipe now thats a different story.

Unfortunately there's no Y-pipe readily available for the 2k2 yet. Even Ethan had to do some Frankenstein work to fit a pre-2k2 pipe on it.

IMHO, the Max is lacking in the handling department. If you live in a place where there's a lot of twists and turns what use is having so much power when you'll only be able to use a small fraction of it because your suspension can't go over nnn speed.

I have yet to see a CAI dyno that wasn't BS. If you have one readily available, I'd like to see. I've been trying to find meaningful dynos for intakes.

Well weres the UDP dyno period. I have seen one uncorrected dyno for it putting down 4whp but thats definently off. frankencar has dynos that i don't consider BS and I will have a dyno with my intake and udp soon. I know for a fact that SR20DEN saw a 1 hp gain over stock with the UDP so I guess I will subtract 1 whp from my dyno to make it accurate as possible. I know for a fact I feel the gains from switching the stock airbox out. If you are calling BS on every org member that says the stock airbox is our weakest link then whats the point of seeing dynos. obviously people dyno and you think its BS.

isn't warpspeed ypipe fits good with 2k2 and pretty good for the price?

and also how good is the maxspeed springs with stock struts?

I know both UDP and CAI add power, Injen is backed by many testimonials and Dyno graphs have been provided. UDP is a nice upgrade by doesn't make the same difference in the car's HP or "fun" factor

to wuote your y pipe statement warpspeed is still making minor changes to the y pipes issued for dyno testing. They should be available next week according to the info I recieved.

Nitrous would be the number on bag for the buck but if you have an automatic a loose torque converter would be second. An automatic with a 3500 stall (and traction) would easily beat a 6 speed with equal hp.

The Frankencar dyno is BS. It's not even on the same scale so you can't overlay it. So you have X max gain, for all you know the rest of the curve is lower.

And yes I'm calling BS on every org member who reports gains, unless they can show me a good dyno, then I will be satisfied. Until then, I believe it's the "it sounds louder so it must be faster" effect, just like mufflers. I've brought this up before and nobody has provided any evidence.

As for the UDP dyno, there is a member who did a dyno for it on his 5th gen when he transplanted it from his 4th gen. He did the write-up on 5thgenmaximas.com I think. It was like 7 hp gain if I remember right.

7 hp yeah right maybe uncorrected. If you want to see results from everybody else give them $50 to go dyno for you to make you happy. I can't see myself dropping $50 to prove someone wrong cause when I do you will call BS. I have both mods and the only gain of the udp is not as much lag with the ac on. With the intake I get a hell of a lot better throttle response and my auto pulls to redline in each gear as with the stock airbox shifted @ 6100 or so.

Ok. Cool. I didn't ask you to go dyno. People always say there are existing dynos, I'm just looking for them.

I haven't done this myself but it occurs to me that the best bang-for-the-buck performance mod is to replace your wheels & tires. Decreased weight and better traction help in your performance, handling, and braking. Granted a decent set of wheels could easily set you back $2-$4k but it impacts everything rather than one aspect of your car.

Well to start off here... Steve from Franken car is anything but a BS'r.. Spreading uneducated rumors about the man is rued and ignorant. I know Steve personaly and I have also dynoed with him. His dyno charts provided on his site are done perfectly fine so I dont know where you get off saying the overlay or whatever is off. Also I have dynoed my 2002 on 3 occasions. I started out with just a franken intake and I did 207.8 WHP, I also tested his ram pipe against the stock resonator piece. His ram pipe added 2.3 WHP, this was done back to back to back.. So before you call BS why dont you learn a thing or two, I have no respect for ignorant people like your self..

Ohh and also I think it's safe to say mods for the maxima do help quite a bit. On my last dyno I put down 229 WHP and 230 WTQ, I also ran a 13.8 and trapped a best of 101.7 MPH.. Now if you wanna see the chart or my slip you can go search, I'd link you but I dont help people who talk **** about my freinds..

I'm not talking **** about your friends. The Frankencar dyno pics they posted don't show anything. That's all. There is no way you can make any conclusions from those pics. Maybe they can from the real dyno graphs, but I can't from the pics. So chill the **** out, I said nothing bad about your friends.

Your wrong, you called his dynoes BS.. The S stands for ****.. His dynoes are perfectly fine and you can easaly make out the gains there. Just look at one dyno and then the other. The peak #'s are right in front off you too. Also if you where not new to the org you would have known a group of canadian dynoed with there franken intakes. They did before and after dynoes and showed there videos and plots of the gains. So maybe in the future you should try reading and searching more before you share your ignorant ideas and call BS on a honest person..

Since this thread is getting beyond a simple vote I might as well throw in my 2 cents. First of all if you are serious about making mods I would follow in the steps of someone who has done it successfully. Their are alot of success stories on the org but for me at least, Emax is the man.

Ok, heres what I think are worthwhile mods for the money. Keep in mind I have not modded my Max at all yet. The damn thing only has 137 miles on it. The break in period is killing me. This list is only based upon what I've learned here at the org.

Aftermarket air intake system. (Franken, Injen, or Berk)
Y pipe and B pipe (soon to be available from Warpspeed and Franken)

These are the first 2 mods I plan on making right now. The Addco RSB sounds great but I've rarely pushed a car to it's handling limits.
Ok, whats next?

UDP
Valve body upgrade (consider a tranny cooler and synthetic ATF)
Light weight wheels (you can find some for under $150 a piece i believe and if you stay with 17 inch rims it's cheaper, just make sure to go to at least 7.5 width. I plan to go to 17x7.5 or 8 and keep the tires stock for now to save some money.

Their is much more possible.
Light weight battery, carbon fiber hood, nitrous, complete bulletproof trannies, high performance torque converters, and of course turbos and superchargers. Oh, and then their is the handling and cosmetic upgrades.

My final advice. Get out while you can or before you know it, your 25k to 30k car will cost 40k. It's to late for me, I'm hooked.

Ok what did I miss or screw up. Feel free to rip me apart.

I agree that the intake is a great beg mod, but why do you guys with 3.5's need to make performance mods your 1st mod. The 3.5's are FAST!!
Work on the suspension; BELIEVE me, a rsb will make a world of difference

It looks like CAI's are coming in first, with the yet-to-be-released Y-Pipe coming second, and RSB in third.
Now since I just finished putting my first 1500 miles on the car (Reno to L.A. and back) I think I have seen what the car is capable of. So far, I know this much about my 2003 SE:
1) It handles like a bus (believe me, I used to drive them).
2) It takes off like a 4-cylinder.
3) It's the first and last Maxima/Nissan I will ever buy.

So my early plan is this...
After the winter passes, I will install lowering springs. Any suggestions? Otherwise I am going with H&R Sport coil springs. Next, the car needs some jump off the line; so here comes a Y-Pipe. Finally, because the car just plain handles like $h*t, I will do the FTB and RTB along with new tires on SE wheels. I will avoid the CAI and UDP, as they have been nearly worthless for the money.

With my plan revealed, are there any other suggestion???
