Are we dorks?

I'll probably get flamed for this, but please refrain from responding if your answer to this post is the following:
- "Who cares what anyone else thinks? You are your own person."

Okay, here is my question. Are we dorks for going online and talking about our cars?

Everyone in my office has a field day with the fact that I am constantly on Maxima.org. The fallback retort for every argument I get into at the office, regardless of topic, is always, "Well at least I don't sit online all day and talk about how cool my car is."

I would consider myself to be relatively cool. I don't go out to bars or anything like I used to, but I'm basically married now and I could care less about drinking and partying.

But then I started thinking about all of the other dorky stuff that I do such as:
- Spend my entire evening at home on the internet
- Play with my 2 cats
- Pluck out my neck hair with tweezers when I'm bored
- Isolate myself from the world in my garage all day on Sundays
- Not return anyone's phone calls.....ever.
- Watch Sex and the City (please refrain from "gay" comments)

Anyhow, I'm getting off topic here, but are we dorks for belonging to an online forum about our cars? Just throwing that out there.....

Are you serious? RH Evo C5s? For the Max? Or the Stang? I scratched one of mine pretty bad yesterday when I was rotating them.

Hey, you free to install the NOS kit this Sunday? It should be here Friday, but I won't have the gauge or the bottle opener yet.

They are made by Katana (?) and they are called c-5's look exactly like yours, for the Max of course, you know the Stang is already hooked up.

Oh yeah, we can put the kit in Sun. if you want. Bring money to get the bottle filled so we can test it out.

Where can I get a switch like this with the cover for my nitrous setup? I want it where my coinholder goes. Is that hard to do? And does the NOS kit come with it?

I fixed the pic. That's gay? I don't want the switch exposed. Plus it reminds me of the missle "fire" switch on the F-16s in Top Gun. I want to cruise around town pretending that I am a "naval aviator".

sure, well... I felt like a nimrod for driving 5 hours to a meet.. boarding my dogs for $200 some odd dollars, 2 nights hotel.. and so on.. Dropped $400-$500 that weekend just to hang with people I met thru the board. But my wife and I truly enjoyed the whole entire time (except it was cold as hell). I don't really keep alot of close friends, but there are people I've met thru these boards that I stay in contact with almost daily - unheard of for me.

Really, how much time on here to you talk about *your* car? I spend 95% of my time on here helping everyone else with theirs. Thats what makes it work. It would be very dorky if all we did was sit around and talk about how cool our own cars are. and really boring..

Yes those are ghey, IMO. I would go with a nice factory looking switch. We could hide it too if you want, but that cost's extra

If you ask me, i'd rather you have a life. Most people who just go to work and come home don't really do much but just that. They don't even have time to socialize with their own family.

And as Tim mentioned, we don't actually just brag about how cool our cars are. We interact. If you think we're dorks for doing that just imagine how it would've been if we actually were dorks bragging about how cool our cars are:

asu174: My car is cool!
2k2_6spd: Hey, mine's cool too!
TimW: You'd never believe how cool mine is either!
max1ma97se: You don't know cool until you see how cool my Max is!
Maksim2000: Oh yeah? Well mine's cool too!
BJGemini: So is mine!
soundmike: We're dorks

what qualifies me an you as dorks is the fact that while the rest of fockers in the thread are from place where it's still pretty early(soundmike is getting close). But you and me, my friend, are in EST which means we're up at 1:40am reading the car forum...

That movie is on right now on channel 27 until 11:30. Promptly at 11:31 I will start a game of F22 Lightning III so that I can pretend I am a naval aviator. lol

Can I come and watch the NOS install and be in the presence of 2 car dorks, so it'll be 3 car dorks? lol

So yeah, back to the topic at hand: no i dont think we are dorks for being members here. I am a member on a computer forum also www.techspot.com/vb and also on a car forum that my friend has www.probetalk.com and I surely am no dork!

I get the same sh*t you do! They say, "Well at least I'm not looking at my car online all day!" Same thing, little different variation to it. So my reply is to say, "What else am I supposed to do to get through the 8 hr. work day? Work? Haha, yeah right..."

I wouldn't say we're dorks for going online and talking about our cars. We come here because we have a common bond, share the same interest, and share experiences and information across which helps benefit others. I mean seriously, how many of you guys know other friends, co-workers and family members who also own a Max (not including the ones you've met from here on the ORG) and are big-time fanatics?? Probably not many! If you did, would you find yourself on here nearly as much?? That all depends........

For me to talk to my friend who owns a Solara, another who owns a Supra, another who owns an RSX, and my sister who owns an Avalon about my Max, just wouldn't be the same for me.

Now on the other hand, the guy at work who's always on the mustang forums, talking about his mustang and how great its going to "be" and how he had it in his mechanic's shop for almost 2 months straight because they couldn't install the aftermarket headers right the 1st time.........HE'S A DORK!

I think it's better to be doing something than doing nothing. Modding our cars is a hobby and this online forum is for us to share our enthusiasm and to receive help from others.

i'd rather be on the org than getting wasted night after night like all the other students here at my school.

It can be nerdy if you take it to an obsessive level, like if you passed up sex to read the forum...haven't done that yet.

But otherwise, I just see this as a great chance for guys to help each other out and learn more about someething we all find interesting.

I'm sure there are dorkier forums, right? Maybe an Audi or BMW forum:
guy 1: I paid more for my car!
guy 2: No man I got ripped off! It's awesome!
guy 3: Isn't it great that we paid two or three times as much as we should have for a luxury performance sedan? We're cool!
guy 1: Yeah and they're so much more expenive to maintain!

Enjoy your Max....have a great day everybody.

on the other hand, if this car obsession is affecting your sex/ love life in a negative manner....then yes, you are a dork my friend.

I tried to describe to one of my clients about what I am doing this Friday (meet at Rockingham). I told him I was going out of town to meet some friends. I tried to explain to them that I am on a forum on the internet and we talk about Maximas and what modifications we can do to them. I told him we were going to the Rockingham dragway to do some runs on the dragstrip. He is a late 40's early 50's dentist that I am doing some network upgrades for. And Yes I did feel like a big dork describing what I was doing.

no we are not dorks.
one of the most important aspects of this forum is the exchange of information and education.

thank god for the internet!!

tons of informative, helpful and educational info is exchanged and provided through this forum. It helps us be educated consumers and maxima owners.

If it wasnt for this forum:

1. I wouldnt know about more than half of the stuff i know about my max.
2. I wouldnt have been able to get my rims for a great price if it wasnt for this forum. (thanks to stillenmaxse) how else would i have been able to buy factory se rims other than at the dealer where i would of been raped.
3. I would of been able to get factory floor mats for such a good price (thanks to jerry rome nissan). the dealer wanted to rape me again.
4. I wouldnt have some knowledge of the TSB's especially on my tranny
which now thanks to this forum i know what to say and do when i go to the dealer.
5. And finally there are so many things to learn how to do such as mods that we can learn from each other and not get ripped off by someone else. for example i wanted to get some white gauges from ebay but wasnt sure about them, one of the guy on the forum had bought them and told me they sucked and not to bother, DUDE that guy saved me the headache......its all about knowledge!!!

sorry for the long post!

Much thanks goes out to the moderators, experienced max owners and the guys who run this forum. It is a great tool!

and hey its cool to see a couple of tricked out maxs once in awhile!

J/K.

Yes, we are dorks. How's this, I sit at my computer all Office Space style and pretend that I am working on important x-ray software, but I really just chat with my friends who are doing the same thing, and browse the web, and talk on the org. Then I go home and play either PS2 or Warcraft III or Wolfenstein and then go to sleep. On weekends I go to a friend's house to get absolutely **** faced and play Tekken 4, Street Fighter Alpha 2, and random other games. Am I a dork?

Absolutely

1. Got max free rotors and pads at 24k miles

2. Is about to get max 6 new coils at 32k, 1 pesky rattle that I would have otherwise shrugged off as impossible to fix.

3. Actually exposed another bug I would have never noticed until too late: the rear bumper finisher/trunk problem (for which its in right now getting "evaluated".

By the time I hit 36k the info I got here will have probably saved me enough to make a mortgage payment or 2!

Much thanks goes out to the moderators, experienced max owners and the guys who run this forum. It is a great tool!

Definitely not a dork. As a new member of the org, I am learning a lot and feel an allegiance with you guys although I can only contribute on minor things. This is a cool sight and there are other things that we could be doing that are a lot worse.

asu174, I am concerned about you isolating yourself in the garage ALL day on Sunday. What are you doing in there?

Like others have said, as long as the forum does not become obsessive, then it's ok. Yes, it CAN be a little dorky, but I find it to be, for the most part
1. fun
2. entertaining
3. informative
Through the forum I have met several people in the local area that I have enjoyed spending time with. Sometimes my girlfriend complains or makes a comment that all I care about is my car or my Maxima friends. That's simply not the case. This is a hobby. It's also a subculture, which is why most of the people in the office make jokes. A lot of the people who modify their cars do it because they want to be a little (or a lot) different than the norm; the forum goes hand in hand with that. And what exactly is the norm?
to me it's driving a toyota camary while listening to the latest pop single on the radio. Being a generally boring person at work and rushing home to watch
the latest episode of Friends (or American Idol) and not having any hobbies.

Who are the dorks...just about everybody where I work.

Yes, Sunday is the day the I like to break my car. I wake up bright and early at 6AM and do a walkaround trying to decide what I am going to break. After choosing what I am going to destroy, I usually have that part done by 8AM. Then I spend the rest of the day attempting to fix it by posting stupid questions on the .org and driving back and forth to Checker.

Actually, Sunday is MY day. I just want to be left the hell alone. I want to cut my grass/trim trees, clean the garage, wash the car, pick up dog poo, do laundry, watch football, etc, etc- whatever it takes to be left alone. I talk to people all week (sales) and weeknight and Saturdays I spend with my fiancee. Sundays (before 6PM when Sopranos comes on) are MY day. Leave me alone (unless you are helping me install a nitrous kit this Sunday- then it's cool. )
