Ignition Coil Packs

Ignition Coil Packs
Apparently my 2000 Max is now a victim of the ignition coil pack problem. Last night when I got in my car after work the service engine light was on. When I acclerate to get on the highway the service engine flashes until you reach speed. Than it just stays on.
I took it to my dealer this morning who reported back that I have two bad coil packs and they need to replace all six. I asked if it was a warranty repair job and he said it was not covered because I have 47,000 miles and am outside of the 36k warrenty period. They have quoted me between $600-$700 to do the repair.
So I have two questions.
1) I read that some people have had luck getting the coils replaced under warranty however no one ever says how many miles they have. Has anyone gotten the job done under warranty with more that 36k?
2) If I do have to pay for this myself is the $600-$700 a reasonable quote or is my dealer screwing me?

It'll cost you about $250 for a new set from some of the discount parts suppliers you can find on this board. It's about an hour job at most.

What about the TSB?
These could/should have been replaced under the TSB! I'm not sure if they will cover TSB related service items outside the warranty...but sometimes they do. If its a TSB, they recognize it as a manufacturers defect.
Give that a shot. I think they have the TSB sticky in the 5th gen FAQ.

The same thing happen to me. My service light has came on a few times and everytime I take it in to see what the problem is it seems to be something different. They kept it for 2 days the last time to find out which coil was bad before they had to replace all 6. It was the #2 coil. With part and labor it was about $300 for everthing. I think the coils are about $60 to $80 a piece. If you do take it in to the dealer you can have them replace the coils that is bad. Good Luck!

Has to be under 36k or they wont pay for it per the TSB. Mine's in for that now. Did you hear knocking or pinging? Thats usually what bad coils do. Mine never threw a code.
Either way, unless you have a service contract, your forked. On the bright side, everyone says the motor runs alot stronger with the new coils. 700 is a tough pill to swallow tho, but you can't leave it like it is. Will cause damage in the long run.
Keep an eye out for the brake judder too.(shaking while hard braking above 60 mph). Its a common problem with our rides, unfortunately. Yours has probably had it done already with the miles you have.
Otherwise, you'll love the ride

Thanks for the replies,
Dragonmonger forget to ask if there might be a link or two describing the coil pack swap on site or elsewhere online. I'd bring my factory repair manual on CDROM to bear, but it goes to my Passat...

Thanks for the advice. My dealer wants nothing to do with replacing them under warranty. I am arguing with Nissan CA but it does seem to make any difference. I will get the extended warranty on my car.
I guess this means that Scotaku and I will be replacing them next weekend ourselves. Anyone have instructions or diagrams on how to do it? Should I replace the plugs at the same time? Anyone have recommendations on which plugs to use? The OEM ones are $52 for the set. Can't I get a performance plug cheaper?

Service Engine Soon (P1320)
Hi All,
This is my first post in this forum. I have a 2k maxima se with 38k. My Service Engine Soon light came on Sunday. I went to Auto Zone to pull the code. It turned out to be P1320, ignition coils. I called 3 dealers today (Monday) and asked if iginitiion coils are cover under the Powertrain Warranty. Two dealers told me NO. One dealer told to bring my car in for them to pull the code. If it is not under warranty it will cost me 1hr labor ($80.00). I also called Nissan Motor Consumer Affair to ask about warranty. They asked me to contact the dealer. A friend told me that his 94 Maxima has had ignition problem as well. I can't believe Nissan won't use better coils after all these years. I am very disappointed with Nissan Motors. To think my next was going to be a 350Z or G35 Coupe.

I have a 2k model with 35k miles and recently started it and it was knocking and pinging which turned into a bad miss and then started running smoothly after 15 to 20 seconds. This has occured only once. My question is, if a coil is going bad would this be intermittent and then go bad or do they go bad all at once? I do not recall and engine light comming on, I could have not seen it as I was trying to figure out what was going on. Thanks

Well my 2k maxima sometime has a weak engine crank. Is not the battery. Also sometime at a stop light my maxima would stall a little when the light turns green. This is under normal driving condition. RPM would drop below 500. Now just over 38500 miles the engine light came on. I reset the engine light and have not change out anything yet. I wanna see if the light comes back up. You might wanna keep an eye out for that. BTW, I am writing a letter to Nissan Motors.

My dealer was not interested in working with me on the Igniton Coil problem. See if I buy a car from them (Antwerpen Nissan in Clarksville, MD for the record). However as you are just out of warranty. The dealer may work with you. Have them check the code. My dealer said I had two bad coils however when I pulled them out and put a volt meter on them only one appeared to be bad.
If you have to do them yourself, it really is as easy as everyone says. It only took me 1.5 hours and I am not a car guy by any means. Dave B. was a pleasure to work with and I had six new coils delivered from Texas 2 days after I ordered them.
