Taking the 2k2 Max Rental to the track this Friday night to see what I can get her to pull in 50 degree weather!

I am hoping for 14s...but we will see. Wonder what would happen if I pulled the filter out?

Any ideas on launching the 2k2 auto and getting the best times since I haven't been driving this car more than a few days. Thanks.

You should get virtually identical times to your 2001 5 spd. I ran at the track the other week for the first time and ran a 14.827, but with a lower trap speed (I'm a 2k2 GLE). From the advice here, and with a little practice before I went, I figured the best thing was to brake torque to about 1500, and manually shift, but shift around the indicated 6000rpm...that way, by the time the transmission reacts, the car shifts around an indicated 6500rpm. Also, when you let of the brake at launch, don't hammer the throttle hard (wheelspin!!)...gently but timely floor it...but it's more a "feel" thing...if I get pushed snuggly into my seat, then i know i'm accelerating properly

Whatever he pulls on Friday in the Max, subtract at least .1 from the time and add a good 2 to 3mph on the trap speed.

 

Good suggestion but not for the 2k2's. The power band on the 2k2's don't go all the way to redline as shown by dyno's unlike the 2k/1's do.

Your best bet is to shift a few hundred rpm's below redline. If you have the time to try it, go WOT on 1st or 2nd gear - the moment you hit close to redline you'll notice there's not as much pull anymore.

 

i agree completely. anything above 5800rpms seems to be a dead spot. my logic was that when the car shifts into the higher gear, won't it be closer to the optimal rpm in that higher gear?

I think you'll be lucky to get a low-15. Rentals are *always* abused. Not broken in properly at all. Plus it's pretty much guaranteed that the car will have 87 gas in it, unless you run the tank dry yourself and fill it up with the right stuff. In that case you'd probably run a little better.

 

You two are both incorrect.. I will say it again, 2002 maxima tach's are 400 RPM's slow. So this means that an indicated 6500 RPM on the tach is really 6100 RPM. And if you look at any dyno you will notice that peak power is right about at 6100.



So Russ take that puppy all the way up to redline, everyone who has ever run there 2002's know that the best times come form redlining.

 

when i got my car dyno'd a few months ago i kept that in mind. the tech kept and eye on it and he said my tach was pretty much dead on.

russ, i dont recommend taking the filter out. i did that on my first run last time i went to the track and my car died at the end of the track. car just stalled and cut off while going 90+ MPH. it started right back up though. not sure why it happened but it has never done that before so i have no choice but to blame it on me taking the filter out.

EDIT: it just occured to me that its a rental so im sure you dont care just a heads up though.

 

hmmm...i floor it almost out of every traffic light and mine's not a rental

my tach is approx. 400rpms slow as the tach needle bounces off the rev limiter around 6900-7000rpm (i find this out after the track closes so i was "shortshifting" the autotragic the whole time )

you know what would be hilarious? Seeing those body shop guys at the track with your CLS.. and getting line up against your own car.. not knowing until later tho, like maybe at the end of the 1/4.

not everyone abuses rental cars. I dont. I dont take them to be detailed or worry about where I park them, but I dont light the tires up either.

Now, I've gotten a Camry that simply wouldnt move unless at WOT. But ya know, I gotta merge.. so thats unintentional beating.. but not intentional abuse.

Peak power at about 5600-5700 and then it drops off. Peak torque at around 3500rpm, hits the secondaries, and then starts to drop off after 4800rpm.

What's your take on the hump at 6000rpm. I haven't seen this before on a stock 2k2 dyno.

Me and some buddies had a new V6 Mustang convertible for a rental car. We were making clouds of smoke at every stop light. All you had to do was push both pedals as hard as you can at the same time. You could spin them as long as you wanted to.

Man I feel sorry for suckers that buy rental cars. I even heard this radio commercial from Budget car sales talking about how rental cars are always kept clean and meticiously maintained. I about died laughing.

 

We need a counter to the CL-S burnout video of at least 3-gears on an automagic.

Whats your point? I see auto 2k+ Maximas failing alot right now and even some 6spds.

Only 2% failure rate of the TL/CL.

And even if it did, at least I have a free 100k 7 year on my tranny, Nissan wouldn't do that

 

We had a 7 year 100k mile warrenty on our 87 maxima .
