I'm confused about oil. Isn't oil just oil so why are (it seems) a lot of people using the 5w30 mobil one oil? does the mobil one oil get me better gas mileage or something? does it break in the engine better? if u guys could tell me anything on whats so great about it i would appreciate it.

i drive a 2k1 gxe with 10.8k miles on it i need a oil change at 11k so can u guys give me ne suggestions? should i just take it into Jiffy lube for 20 some bucks? or get that mobil one oil? are there any oil changing places that use MObil one? or do i hafta go buy the MObil one oil and bring it to them and tell them to change it for me?

i apologize for the many newbie questions. im 18 in college and trying to learn more about cars. so any help would be great

 

I would recommend changing the oil yourself. You save yourself some money (except for the first time cuz you gota buy supplies)
and you'll have peace of mind.

I use 5w-30 mobil one synthetic.

Things you'll need:

1) Ratchett Set
2) Oil Pan
3) Funnel
4) OEM filter
5) 4 quarts of oil
6) Jack stands

The first time might be a bit messy but after a while you'll gt the hang of it.

 

and oil isn't "just oil"... it's all about degrees of protection. Some oils provide better protection through better refinement, additives, etc. Congratulations on wanting to learn more but the oil topics is probably in the top 5 topics so it'd be easier for you to search than start another thread about it.
