Clutch Questions

Yesterday I took off in first and slammed it to second, but instead of hearing the usuall chirp, I noticed that the RPM sat still at like 5k rpm's and then it started to move up to redline. So I thought that it was a little weird, so I stopped and tried again, this time I chirped 2nd and 3rd.
Then on the way to work I was going up a hill and I put it into third and floored it, and the RPM went to about 5k and slowed down again. (maybe the hill????)
I have 22,000 miles and I need some advice on what this could be, or if it is normal. Thanks

$1k to spend? I think I know where at least

half of this needs to go to..a new clutch!

Seriously, this uncontrolled increase in RPMs is NOT normal and usually an indication of a fried clutch but that's unusual at 22k miles..go have this checked at the dealer...

sounds like you hit red line and didn't realize it, then it slowed down to 5 rpm. hitting red line is normal to cause this, but did you loose power when you step on the gas again? if you did, then your clutch may need to adjust or probably fried..

i dunno about your 6 speed, but my 5 speed would not allow me to floor 3 rd gear without hitting red line, especially going up hill.if i floored 3rd, then i would have to shift quickly to 4th just to avoid hitting red...

The RPM's were on the way up and when they got to 5 it stopped for a split second, and then continued. and I shifted..

Re: Re: Re: Clutch Questions

My clutch did the same thing but with about 88,000. You must not be very nice to yours if it is doing that at 22,000. It slipped. Mine would do the slipping for about 2 weeks after I could floor it in 3rd going up a hill and would slip just like that. It inventually went away though. You just just got the disc to hot and over heated the surface it will take a few miles to wear down the surface to get some fresh disc. You keep doing that though and it will keep slipping. Either don't catch 2nd any more or buy a new clutch if that is something you have to keep doing.

Oh, you can't adjust a Maxima clutch either, at least not on the 95-99. I think you can adjust the pedal but not the actual clutch.
