Traded in my crappy 2K2 6 Speed

I've had it with my 2K2 SE, and traded it in for a fully loaded Silver 2K SE 5 speed, with Black leather. Saved me over 100 bucks a month on my car payment, and it just feels like a better Car. I had nothing but problems with my 2K2, for example my check engine light came on 4 times in the last 6 months. All for a different reason. Once it left me stranded and I had to get towed to the dealer. The transmission totally sucks, Notchy shifting, espicially in 3rd and 4th, no reason for that in a car in this class! My 5 speed shifts smooth as silk in every gear. I honestly feel like I'm in a better car when driving the 2K, although I will admit I've given up a few ponies. The 2K2 is much more powerfull, but I can live with 222HP.
I've owned Maxima's for nearly 10 years, a 93,96, 2k2 and now a 2K. I have to say my 2K2 was by far, the worst car of the bunch. I still love my maxima's but can't say much for that 2K2&3 models, and certainly won't recommend them to anyone!

Wow, John you have got to be the first person on the .org who has traded a 2k2 for 2k. Hope you have a better luck with the 2k, I certainly have enjoyed mine.

Ditto. I always read the "squawk about this and that" threads and just think, "I really like my Maxima".

You're the first I've heard of someone trading down but your "new" 2K 5-speed is a great car. I've test driven a 2K2 6-speed and I disliked the notchy feeling. I had a hard time getting the 6-speed into reverse. I love my 5-speed transmission much more and after 1 1/2 years of ownership, I've had zero mechanical or electrical problems with my 2K1.

John,

If you don't mind me asking, how much did they give you on your 2k2, and what options, mileage, etc. did you have. I too have a 2k2 auto with navi, etc. and have been strongly thinking of trading it in, but am afraid I am going to lose my ****.

Thanks in advance for the info.

Who cares about a bit more power when you have so many problems and that lousy 6spd shifter. Good choice!

why? did you drive his car? did you own it?

He had problems with his car... what else would he say? He didn't say ALL 2K2 were crap... just HIS.

Plus, this forum is about people discussing problems, technical discussions, and other enlightening things about Maximas. To limit it to just positive stuff wouldn't be right.

Please don't get me wrong! The 2K2 is a great car, I just had alot of problems with mine. Maby if I'd of had an automatic I'd still have it, But I really hated that notchy gearbox, just one of those things that drove me nuts every time I drove the car! The 2K2 is an awsome performer, although I don't think Nissan has worked all the bugs out of the 3.5 yet, (too many check engine lights). Just by reading alot on the .ORG its obvious there are alot more problems out there than in the 2K & 2K1 models. Oh well I'm still a Maxima owner, and proud of it. And I certainly won't try to race with a 2K2 or 2K3!

This still doesn't beat Paul's record.

He got a 2k2 6spd when they first came out, and then traded it in only a month later for an 02 Altima 4-cyl auto, but not before running a 14.8 @ 97 in the Max.

Primary reason was that the 6spd shifter sucked major a$$ and insane traffic in the DC area.

Well john you're not the only person out there having thoughts of trading a 2K2 Max in I am as well but my gripe is the ****ty Customer Service and My damn Bose CD changer skips all the time... I am seriously thinking of trading my Max in for a Nice used car like a 2002 Millenia or Lincoln LS I can get one used and save a lot $$ in payments, but reality sets in and I look at the car and I'm torn...

The shifter is toatally unacceptable for this car I agree. It feels like it's from a 1985 Subaru. If someone could make a slick shifter for this car they could sell it for a lot of money. This is a major fault of the car and if it was fixed it would toatlly transform it.

Yeah....those are MUCH better cars. Have fun replacing the tranny every 30,000 miles.

Your skipping CD changer is Mickey Mouse stuff compared to the problems you will have with a Mazda.

true, true. I was behind a brand new Millenia the other day.

For the same reason Deer freeze in headlights, other cars tend to flee when my HIDs come up on them Anyway he romped on it and I just hung with him, going with the flow - not riding his a$$ or anything. Then all of a sudden he started James Bond smoke screening me. He pulled off and I had oily crap all over my car when I got home and had to wash it. That couldnt have been a good thing.

LS? I like them..

John-

Put on an Y-pipe, fix the nasty crush bend in the B-pipe, install an UDP, and mount some lighter rims and you won't have any problems with the 2k2s. The 00-01 clearly doesn't feel as torquey as the 3.5, but the 00-01 really revs strong and continues to make power straight to the 6500 redline. Russ got a 14.8@94 out of his stock 2k1 and MadMax got a 14.3@97mph out of his 2k with a Y-pipe and intake. I drove Russ' stock 2k1 and it felt very refined compared to my 96 SE. It was very quiet and smooth, but it didn't feel nearly as lively as my 96. However, on the dyno, his stock 2k1 made more 7fwhp more than my 96 with a y-pipe, UDP, B-pipe, and intake. I believe his 2k1 made 183fwhp/191fwtq vs my 176fwhp/193fwtq.

The playing field between the 95-99, 00-01, and 02-03 is extremely close now and will come down to the driver. If I had to buy a 00-01, I'd get a 5 speed. If I had to buy a 2k2, I'd get the auto. I've felt the 6 speed and it feels like "like shifting a screwdriver in a bucket of nuts". I wasn't impressed. Cable shifters, while they do reduce drivetrain vibrations, are horrible for performance and shift feel.

Yea, my 2k3 seems ok. The only problem I have is some times it feels a little sticky going into 6th gear (but that could be me afraid to put it into reverse ). I had the same "Sticky" thing on my old T/A with a 6 SP. The only complaint I have about the transmission is that the clutch catches so high! After having 2 old Sentras, I think this is just a Nissan thing.

To be honest, I had my 2k2 since September and I love my car. My 6spd isn't "as" notchy as the day I got my car. Its still a little notchy going from 4th-5th. But I am really use to it.

I test drove a 2k2 M5 couple days ago and the 6spd shifter was SUPER SMOOTH compare to my Max. Even though my car is only 1/3 of its price, but its still no excuse why our shifter had to be crappy.

Agreed, how come Honda can put a smooth shifter in almost all their cars (including Civics) but Nissan can't seem to master it? Other makes that come to mind with smooth shifters: VW, Toyota and even Mazda Protege.

You may have just answered you own question indirectly.

Look at the names of the makes you mentioned. Now put Nissan in the mix. Then check out the financial condition of all the above (including the past say 3 years). One company stands out as needing to 'cut costs' and therefore 'corners' more than others...guess which...

kingpin calm down man! I wouldn't give my Max up but My Bose head unit ****es me off! It's being replaced but the service dept is dragging their feet on this issue and the service itself is terrible. if I could take my car to an Infiniti dealer it would be a different story. I love my Max but the ownership experience is ****ty! The car is worth it but I like the LS alot maybe I'll get a Infiniti in a couple years

I don't think you have to be scared of going into reverse. The 6 speed has the safety there (you have to lift the top of the boot to engage reverse). A friend of mine test drove the 6 speed, and he didn't know about the safety, so he kept on trying to jam it into reverse, but couldn't do it (until the dealer told him about the safety )

John
ur wrong about ur car being the worst. i got u beat by far. i would love to have had ur car instead of mine. too many problems to list. lets just say that they (nissan) spent about half the price of the car fixing it. ive had mine towed 2 or 3 times to the dealer. congrats on the trade kinda sucks but it was ur choice and i dont blame u at all.

14.7. Not bad for a virgin Maxima. Now only if Nissan could make shifters like Honda...

Good for you....I should have done what you did way back in 2000 and I wouldn't be stuck with a car that is worth almost less than trade in value

The 2k2-3 sure look beautiful but I'm not gonna take a chance and roll the Nissan dice again.

Doing pretty good. I've been doing a lot more surfing lately, now that I have Comcast Internet.

The Ford Taurus SHO, the V6 5 speed Yamahaed ones, had a cable to rod shifter mod. Has that happened for the 2K2 or 2K3 Maxima 6 speed? Also, could the notchiness also be attributed to the so-so tranny fluid that the car came with?? That was the case with my 98 5 speed. Once I put in Redline, the gearbox got a whole lot better.

A few people have put in synthetic fluid and they said it helped a bit. I bet with the combination of the Spec V and the Maxima, someone will come up with a conversion kit.
