Traded in my crappy 2K2 6 Speed
So the Sentra Spec V 6 speed is a rod shifter design? Maybe there's hope for the Maxima manual, then.

sorry to hear your bad experience... I have a 2k1 and it's been nothing but smooth sailing (except for a hail storm...) *ahem* but anyway, the ONLY complaint I have is a very long throw in my 5-speed and of course the fabulously easy to chip paint job.
other than that, I've never had a mechanical problem of ANY sort!!! although I can't figure out what that winshield wiper fluid light means.... empty or is it heating the stuff up??? (only comes on in the winter, and last time it did I knew I was somewhat low on fluid.

No, they are both cable shifters. My point was that there should be strong interest in a rod shifter kit, since there are 2 cars that use the same 6 speed transmission.

Yeah, I'm 99.5% sure. I read about that in several places. I'll see if I can quote some sources for you later.
Here's what Sport Compact Car said when the Spec V first came out.
"The six-speed gearbox also promises to be far stronger than the earlier SE-R's five speed. The new box will be shared with a 260-hp version of the Maxima, a car that puts a far heavier load on its drivetrain than the relatively dainty Sentra. In a departure from standard Nissan practice, the new gearbox is cable shifted. While Nissan's past rod shifters have always offered excellent feel, the switch to cables was a packaging necessity."

I had nothing but problems with my 2K2, for example my check engine light came on 4 times in the last 6 months. All for a different reason. Once it left me stranded and I had to get towed to the dealer. The transmission totally sucks, Notchy shifting, espicially in 3rd and 4th, no reason for that in a car in this class! My 5 speed shifts smooth as silk in every gear. I honestly feel like I'm in a better car when driving the 2K, although I will admit I've given up a few ponies. The 2K2 is much more powerfull, but I can live with 222HP.
I've owned Maxima's for nearly 10 years, a 93,96, 2k2 and now a 2K. I have to say my 2K2 was by far, the worst car of the bunch. I still love my maxima's but can't say much for that 2K2&3 models, and certainly won't recommend them to anyone!

Doing pretty good. I've been doing a lot more surfing lately, now that I have Comcast Internet.
