New Maxima Owner
Hi there,
I am a new member (and maxima owner - 2003) and am so happy that there is such a thing as this forum. You guys are great!! I recently bought an 03 SE (fully loaded except navigation), and the ride is beautiful. For the two weeks that I have had the maxima, even though as a first new car it was pretty expensive, I am so happy that I have it.
I wanted to ask everyone if they purchased lojac and the passive alarm from the dealer. As they were selling me the car, they said that I HAD to get the alarm factory authorized, or else my warranty would be void. I checked out with tons of other dealers and mechanics, and they all said dealers are always looking for a way out of the warranty, and that would be one of them. The would simply say that someone else messed with the electrical system. I wanted to know what you thought about that, since their alarm is several hundred dollars more than the nearest alarm/stereo dealer.
And as for lojac, how good is that?
For those who are curious, I got the car for $25,500 before taxes and before the lojac and alarm. That included the Titanium, Meridian, Traction control, leather, packages. About 27,000 with everything (before taxes). Was that a good price?
Finally, a friend of mine just had his lights stolen. Since I am in New York City, I can imagine that this is something that will occur more and more frequently. I hope that there will eventually be a good way of protecting them. Maybe a hood lock?
Anyways, thanks for having such a great forum that I am happy to be part of!!

as for the headlights, since you're in NYC, you should invest in a set of HID bolts. Just do a search for "HID bolts". Moderator TimW handles that.
Best of luck with your car, how you enjoy it as much as I do.
Welcome and congrats on the SE. Do you have the 6 speed or auto?
You will find a wealth of information here on the org...check out the 'stickies'...the posts at the beginning of each forum. The search tool in the upper right is very helpful, too.
If you haven't already, you will be bitten by the mod bug.....

Thanks for all your responses!!!
I don't think I'll be doing any mods for 3-5 years, just so I don't put my warranty in jeopardy.
Thanks again!!
Re: New Maxima Owner
Congrats on your car.
Dealers always markup alarm prices, that's how they make money and rip people off at the same time.
Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act of 1975 prohibits the invalidation of a warranty due to the addition of accessory equipment. Don't let that new car dealer tell you they have to install their Alarm or Remote Start or your warranty will be voided.
"MY CAR SALESMAN SAID IF I INSTALLED ANY AFTERMARKET EQUIPMENT ON MY VEHICLE OTHER THAN THE FACTORY EQUIPMENT, IT WOULD VOID MY WARRANTY. IS THIS TRUE?
No, this is NOT true! A Federal Law (Magnuson - Moss Act) protects you against a car dealer voiding your warranty. Many car dealers use this threat to frighten you into buying a more expensive anti theft system from them.

There are many things that you can do to mod your vehicle that won't come anywhere near voiding your warranty. FSTB, RSB, lighting, wheels and tires, springs and struts, audio...

There...now you can cut those 3 to 5 years to MONTHS, or if you hang around here...you'll be modding in 3 to 5 WEEKS!!
The only stuff that might mess with your warranty would be some serious enging mods. You might want to stay away from those mods for a bit..

From what I have learned, it's not the aftermarket equipment itself that voids the warranty, its the fact that someone who was not authorized tampered with the electrical system. So when you go into the dealer for a repair on the electrical system (for a short somewhere), they can say that it was due to tampering of the system. I have spoken to a many people about this (who had nothing to do with me buying the car), and almost everyone said unfortunately they could do this. It makes sense since it is more profitable for them to find ways to say the car is not under any warranty.
But I like the fact that you knew of this law. But I'm thinking that although, it really was a ripoff to buy a factory authorized alarm, it probably was the only way to go. I have two friends who are really into cars, mods and such, and they both said that after installing their own alarm, they had problems with their electrical systems. And when they brought their cars into their dealer, the dealer said that their car warranty was void.
Scary, huh. But if any of you have other info that would be greatly appreciated. This would help in the future!!!
Thanks!!
Re: Re: Re: New Maxima Owner
I would hazard a guess that the majority of Maximas on this list have an auxiliary alarm in addition to the factory security system.
If a good electronics shop installs your alarm, one that has good techs and are an authorized distributor of a manufacturers products, wiring issues are rare and if they do occur, the shop usually takes care of it. If something were to arise in the future, and the dealer throws the blame on the aftermarket alarm, I would go back to the shop that originally installed it, to have them check on it, and if thats not the case, then the dealer has to fix it. Of course this may require in your case, numerous escalations through various vendor channels.
I would much rather take the risk of fighting the dealer than leaving my Max exposed with just the factory alarm system because it really is very weak.
