Lost...to an CLK55 AMG

Sorry, it was a CLK55 AMG - don't particularly know Mercedes models. Anyway, yes, I know, I didn't have a chance. But he was getting frisky right beside me (jumped his car - what a dork), so I thought what the hell. We both hit it entering the highway, and as you'd expect he pulled away - but it wasn't as fast as you'd think for that car (hey, twice the $$ should buy more than that). By the time we hit 100 he'd gained about 25 yards (I started about 25 yards behind since I'm not much for tailgating at speed). I pulled back up to him at about 130. For all I know he waited, but he was still accelerating, so dunno.

Anyway, by that time we'd reached my exit so I let off. Amusingly, right when I did he gave me the cool wave and floored it - he's no doubt happy with how fast he pulled away from my slowing 2k3! Wonder if he knows his 2x car price bought him...10mph more top end? It's a sweet car though, and they ain't slow.

2x the price of your car bought him a very refined car. It's more than the 10mph top end. I'd give my right nut for one of those.

S55 AMGs cost waaaaaaaaay more than 2x a maxima. more like 4x or 5x (with their $100,000 price tag)

the car has around 355 HP but it weighs over 2 tonsso that will slow it down. the owner didnt pay all that money for speed. they paid it for an amazing all around car.

if it was a CLK55 AMG, that sucker is about 3.5x the price of a maxima. also a very heavy car at around 3900 lbs and 340 HP to back it up.

Those cars are simply pimp. I see them occasionally when I'm in Chicago and all the guys that drive'em look like they're "made."

My bad - couldn't remember which Mercedes it was, so had to look it up. It was a CLK 55 AMG, and yes - I know it's a nice car. Not worth a nut though...

Those CLK55s are fast! I bet the guy was just playing with you though. I raced my friends CLK55 on the highway and it was a raping. I would say 20+ carlengths easily.

Well technically you can "donate" a nut for about $50,000 so it's worth more than a nut....

I don't know where you would "donate" it though...

I'm going to guess that he didn't give it his all against you. Keep in mind he has a 5.5L Supercharged V8 under his hood, against your 3.5L V6.

One of my friends has a dad who works for Mercedes, he filled me in that the new 600s (S600, CL600, SL600, etc.) will be sporting 6.0L V12s with DUAL turbos! And also the new AMG 55s will be sporting 5.5L V8s with DUAL supercharges!!

I wish i had the money to SINGLE supercharge my car, let alone DUAL supercharge it!

Well, for the CLK55 AMG's owner's sake, I hope he'd pull on you. Considering how much $ he dished out for the car, I would think it should beat an under-$30K car.

On the other hand, I much prefer the M division from BMW over the AMG tuners. Mercedes is more class, although they do try to put in a lot of power into their recent lineups. But the fact that they've yet to offer a stick shift on an E55 AMG, for example, is mind boggling to me. Bottom line: I'd take the M5 any day over ANY Mercedes.

Are you saying he's wrong? He wasn't trying to sell a 16 year old kid an AMG trust me dave, but how are you so sure he is wrong? It is not impossible to have twin turbos, as they have them on porsches, and the same with superchargers. Don't be so quick to discourage what someone else says.

if i raced that driver on that particular run the way i normally run, i would have literally given him a run for his money.

My father just bought the new SL55 and it has only a single supercharger and believe me it does the job and if it wasnt for the passport 8500 id have a gigantic speeding ticket...but about the twin turbo v12 ,while me and my father were in the dealership i did have the oppurtunity to pick the salesman's brain about this brand new 03 facelifted cl600 with full lorinser kit & rims that i was drooling over, he also said it has a twin turbo, and so does the new benz brochure...pushing almost 500 hp

Last i saw they were selling for approx 150K , due to the large demand, with some going as high as 175K. I saw one in Newport Beach, Cali with 20" Lowenharts... Oh My FREAKIN God ! ! !

Im from Ny originally. If I owned one, it would never see the Belt Pkwy....unless I was going to JFK.... That POS expressway !

LOL the belt does suck, esp now that they opened up a new mall by the starett city exit... so much traffic. After putting a deposit down for the SL last summer we finally got our car from Soverign Benz on the 25th and i was actually driving it to the dealership to pick up the car cover ,and wat a drive it was lol. I go to college in florida and man i wish i had that thing down here, it was a shame i couldnt even put the top down. Oh yeah by the way who was the 4th gen max who tried racing me last nite on the southern state. Blue, altezza's and a 5inch rice muffler? Bro, i honked at u to say nice car and u took off, sorry i had to walk u like that lol. But hey normally i drive an i30 and all these ****s in their amg benzs and m beemers abuse me lol.

What is it with people using this arguement? "He shoulda pulled on you because he payed way more for his vehicle" Do you really think that guy gives a **** how much less that maxima costs than his Merc? Just because a car's expensive doesnt mean it HAS to be fast, and just because a car's cheap doesnt mean it HAS to be slow!

And besides, we're all overlooking the main point here:

He just got by an SUV

Am I the only one that does not like Mercedes on this thing? I personally cant stand Mercedes, for all that cash you could do so, so much more(and im my opinion so much cooler). Try restoring a 72 Chevelle, drop in a 502, maybe a supercharger(if they make them for those)...and you'll have hell on wheels, which looks much more badass than a Benz anyday. Oh yeah, and have about 60K left over.

Umm.... no.... Whatever you're smoking, why arent you sharing?

A new M5 or a new M3 will handily dispense with an E55. The M3s and M5s both run about 13.1-13.4 @108... an E55 runs about 13.6@106.... so it's not like either M car would route the E55, but it would indeed beat the Merc.

Why you ask? It's called a manual tranny, look into it... and while you're at it, call Mercedes and relay my message to them

I have to agree with Linh. Automobile Magazine (Dec 2002 issue) has a comparo between the Audi RS6, Jag X-Type R, E55 and M5. Both the RS6 and E55 easily outaccelerate the the M5 0-60, 0-100, 0-150 and right up to the governed limit of 155mph. Perspective: The E55 is almost as quick as the new Cobra R.

Hard to believe but true!! The auto E55 IS packing 75 more HP than the M5 and this is more than enough to overpower the 6sp manual M5.

Get a Porsche 911 Turbo. My friend has one of those and I beleive the 0 - 60 is in the high 3's!!!!

I drove it, and it is like nothing else on the planet (without wings). He paid about $125,000 for it so I guess its in this neighborhood. With the 4 wheel drive it handles like it is on rails. I did 135MPH in 3rd gear! Then my buddy almost s^hit his pants so I had to slow down .

That's the NEW E55 being compared to the OLD M5. M5 is being redesigned, and they're putting a V10 in there. Once that's out (I believe in the next year), you can forget about the Benz. The M will have over 500 hp. AMG has nothing on the M division, from top to bottom. Get over it !

The new E55 Kompressor isnt out yet. The old E55 will get beat by a E39 M5. The new one is fast as hell. Did anyone check out the times and how the E55 got to 140 (IIRC) in half the time as the S-type R?

Benz is stepping up to the plate lately. BMW is going to have to make one hell of a car to beat the new E55.

The new M5 wont be out for a while. They havent even brought out the new design for the 5 yet. Id say it will be a good 2 years or so. The car to get is the new 530i, 380 hp and Twin Turbos

The pics aren't out yet (at least I couldn't find them with a quick search). But, the M will always be ahead of AMG, as this has been the trend thus far. The new E55 is perhaps faster than the current M5, but the new M5 will have performance similar to the 911 turbo (my dream car). Also, as long as AMG does not offer stick shifts, they will never have TRUE drivers' cars. That's what I like about BMW--it's not all about class for them. They know that some people like to drive for the sake of driving. AMG tries to put up massive HP and torque numbers, but they're all autotragics. We'll see what happens though.
