Please Help A Mechanical Aliterate with Service Engine Soon light?? (Long)
Let me just mention I have searched this topic and feel I
understand for the most part that if I go to a Auto Zone and
have them check the codes I will find out for sure what the
problem is. But the main questions I have are:
1. If it is the O2 sensor by the cat like my non Nissan mechanic
had told me about 2 weeks early but never changed
how do I go about getting it fixed the least expensive way?
A. How much can this work and part cost?
My warranty I think was only 3yr. 30k.
2. Does this type of work need to be done by Nissan only?
A. Can I ask Auto Zone to pull it off the machine and leave without giving them
the business after they told me what the problem was? (more of a personal dilemma..)
3. Will my greddy cat back and cone filter be a problem or the scapegoat for the problem?
(I have had them for over 1.5 years without a problem)
Any sound advise will be very helpful and greatly appreciated.
Thanks
Here is the story for those who care.....
I have 39,450 miles on my 2k max se and I have never had
the SES light come on other then the time I installed my mods
and after resetting the computer by disconnecting the batt,
the light never showed up again...
Until three weeks ago.
The day it came on I brought it to my oil change, inspection mechanic
and he tried to charge me $100 for 10-30mins work, and in the end
he said the code pointed to me O2 sensor by the cats but he never
replaced it or them, to save me the parts money.(the nice guy that he is)
He felt it was unnecessary to change the sensor.
After talking to him about the $100 charge he agreed to take $45. I still felt taken.
The light was off for two weeks and now its back.... NOW, WHAT DO I DO?

ill do my best to answer the questions but there are alot so forgive me if i leave something out.
the cheapest way to have the oxygen sensors is to buy the part and install yourself. short of that, there are websites such as oxygensensors.com or something like that. they will probably be a little cheaper than nissan and you should be able to take them to a non nissan mechanic to install. any competent mechanic can install them. ive seen them run anywhere from 150 to 225 for each oxygen sensor. i would take it auto zone to back up what the mechanic, its free anyways. i doubt autozone has an oxygen sensor or at least in stock so dont feel bad about using them for the diagnostic. there was a TSB by nissan about the oxygen sensors but you are out of the 36k mile warranty so i doubt youd get them to replace them. i think thats everything, but if you were inside the 36k warranty and didnt have the mods on because they will use it to at least hassle you then id say take to nissan.

Cheapest way:
1) Run the ecu diagnostics to confirm the code(read faq and search)
2) Do a search on Oxygen sensors to find the cheapest prices for oem replacements
3) Do a search on replacing them. If it's beyond your skills, do a search in your Yellow pages and call a local repair shop to see how much it is to replace(because in the end, it won't matter what someone said they got it replaced for 3000 miles from where you are)
