Bad Axle Bearing at 76K?????/

I was having a new set of tires installed today (225/55/17) and the shop discovered that the right front axle bearing was bad. I'm sorta ****ed because my car has 76k HIGHWAY miles.

Has anyone else had this problem? What causes the bearing to go bad? Is this a case of bad engineering on Nissans part? I know that there is a TSB out, but I'm SOL because its out of warranty.
