on the 2000-2001 maxima, wuts the weight distibution?? i know its not 50 50.. so far the only cars i noe that have 50 50 are BMW.. nice handling cars, but for the nissan maxima... near 60%? or more... and does that cause a large amount of understeer???

MotorTrend dec/99 Maxima GXE: Weight Distribution 62/38. Yes the car will be more inclined towards understeering at the limits, but you can get the tail to swing around by "lift-throttle." If you don't know what "life-throttle" is, its when you let off the gas pedal in a turn, that causes MORE weight to be transfered to the front, causing a "braking" action and making the rear end lighter, and the tail will come around. To much oversteer? Stab on the gas and it will understeer.

It depends on the level of understeer your car is in. Most cars will understeer in a corner, even at low speeds, but you can't feel them. When I take fast turns, I can't "feel" understeer, ex. vibrations or shuddering, I can "sense" the front end is losing grip and I just slowly let off the gas, and that brings the car back into line with no oversteer.

oh... i c i c... so do u noe ne softer tires??i heard that my decrease the chances of having a lot of understeer because of its better ability to grip the road... makes scence.. not sure if its for sure.. ne wayz i also needa noe wut kan make a maxima accelerate much quicker.. lets say 1-2 second range... thanx

1-2 second 0-60 range is impossible :-) Unless you are driving a top fuel drag racing car. But if you are talking about lessing the 0-60 times in the 1-2 second range, a good exhaust, intake, headers, lessening the cars' weight, recalibrated torque converter, spark plugs, reprogramming the computer ( if thats possible on the 5g's ). I'm definately sure there are more items you can do, such as Supercharging, or go bottleect... Softer tires could possibly give you better handling, but you usually get less tread life. If your tires are to grippy, it could possible bog your engine if it doesn't produce enough torque. But thats nothing to worry about, this car isn't a Torqueless
Wunder
like an Chevy Metro.

And you were sayin that a heavier rear makes the car oversteer. I have taught you well my son .

Oh, what I said WAS right AND what YOU said was right. Relatively speaking if you're steady state corning, the heavier weight on the wheels, the more grip it WILL produce, but the tires can only take a certain amount, and the tires with more weight will lose grip and oversteer or understeer. But you can counter over/understeer with brake application, let off the gas OR a stab on the gas because weight transfers to the front or rear of the car and the car will either be "neutral" or do the opposite of what it was doing earlier.

I didn't exactly mentioned the "counter over/understeer" in the last posting But I did mention the rest, only in different sentences.

Stock, the car understeers pretty badly near the limit As do all front wheel drive cars). There are a number of driving tricks that can overcome some of this, they take practise (a snowy or wet parking lot is good). You can also get some improvement from running the front tires 4-5 psi higher pressure than the rears. The rear swaybars are very popular because they help the most.

Sorry - forgot, you can help eliminate understeer by increasing negative camber at the front too.
