Some people have, if you look on the board you can see many are running this. Also this is a very controvercial topic since the DOT recommends the widest you can go on a 17x7" tire is a 225.

Sorry, Dixit. A 235mm wide tire will fit properly on a 7.0" wide rim provided the aspect ratio is 50 or higher.

Sumitomo says you can put their 225 45 17's (HTR ZII) on a 7" inch rim. That's the widest I've seen. So I bought some. They should be in next week. In fact the road test by Tire Rack was done on an IS300 w/17 x7's for this tire.

That's true, for a 45 series tire. A 235/50/17 in in spec for a 7" rim. A 235/45/17 is not.

Check out the Sumitomotire website www.sumitomotire.com as well as tire rack's review of the tire wherein they state that the tire was on a 17x7 rim... it is in writing!

Gentlemen, gentlemen . . .

Apparently we're having a great deal of difficulty reading specification charts. So let's everybody SLOW DOWN and take it from the top.

Begin by proceeding to the Tire & Rim Association Contour (Rim Width) Charts I referred to in my previous post. I'm not going to post a link. If you guys can't find it, you deserve to believe whatever you want to believe.

Proceed next to the rim width specifications for the 225/45R17 tire. Everybody find it? Good. What are the acceptable rim widths for the 225/45R17 tire? Write them down here:

Next, take a look at the acceptable rim widths for the 235/45R17 tire. Got it? Write them down here:

____________________

Finally, check out the acceptable rim widths for the 235/50R17 tire. Write those down here:

Any further questions?

Y2KSE I agree with you there, I think we just miscommunicated on the series of the tire. Because technically if you go 235 you should go 45 to compensate and keep the speedo closer to be accurate. 235/50 would make it a bit more off.

That is why I assumed when you said 235, you also meant a 45 series. Plus he orinially asked in the post about a 45 series tire.

Your point is well taken, Dixit, particularly given the fact that our speedos tend to run fast anyway. If anything, a tire with a smaller overall diameter would help to correct that problem. But keep this in mind. Decreasing the diameter creates more fender gap, stiffens the ride, and may reduce the tire's load capacity.
