how do the white gauges work?

Hey everyone...I installed the white SE Gauges into my 2k1 GXE, did the board swap and everything and it came out great and looks great, no problems. I wanted to know how the numbers are black during the day, but light up white at night, what's the technology behind it?...it's been bugging me ever since I got them. Those things are so cool looking, I can't believe they come stock on SEs...

If you're talking about the stock ones...

The numbers aren't really black, they're clear, but what's behind them is dark. When the lights come on it shines through the numbers. Then when you look at the bright numbers, you can't really see the non-lit white face. Like when you look at a house at night with bright lights out front. You can't really see in because the lights are affecting your vision. Hope it helps.

I actually got them off there - had them shipped from Indiana or something like that.

The white face gauges were on my main attraction to the 3rd gen SE When I bought one in 94. I was 20 then and just had to have a maxima. No-one would talk me out that one.

Does everbody elses transition like ours, I thought Chrysler ones stayed with the white background even at night who knows? I wonder if the 6th gen SE is going to keep this Maxima SE tradition since 89.

I saw a Civic that had factory white gauges...it turned kind off all grayish whitish and very hard to read at night. I guess you get what you pay for
