Y-Pipe / Exhaust Wrapping How to on motorvate.ca

If anyone is looking for pics & how to wrap your y-pipe/exhaust look here:
www.motorvate.ca on the left menu click on "engine", then "Y-pipe exhaust wrapping"

I wrapped my exhaust way back in June, and updated the web site tonight.

Question I got since I dont fully understand this wrapping deal is when I wrap it, it will make my EGT temps more accurate right?

So techinically without it, you get slightly incorrect readings on a boosted car. If so, how off can the reading be? 20-50 degrees?

Only reason I ask since most people really rely on EGTs to see if they are running too lean or rich with a supercharger or a turbo car.

Great Question!

I agree that they might be 20-50 degrees cooler, but does that difference:
(1) show up on the gauge? Could you see 50 degrees difference on this gauge?

(2) really matter? 50 degrees in the big picture is a nit.

Well I take how MardisGrasMax always talks about his EGTs and he is always talking about it as accurate as 25 degrees

I remember when he changed his injectors to the 370cc he was mentioning how his EGTs were 700, and then got them around 750, and then more tweaking got them around 780...

That is the only reason I asked.

it will stabilize the EGT and the readings will not fluctuate during raining or windy day. wrapping is highly recommanded for stainless steel y pipe without powdercoating. Y pipe with powder coat will trap the heat a bit better than the ones without.

Sorry if I don't understand

Are we trying to keep the heat in? and if so what would be the benefit. I assume that EGT refers to Exhaust Gas Temperature. Is running cooler EGT a sign of running too lean? Thanks.

yes, we are trying to keep the heat in. The benefit is to have a stable EGT readings and faster exhaust gas flow. having an EGT (Exhaust Gas Temperature) at 600 C means u r running rich and having it at 800 means that u r leaning out.

the reason that people are wrapping their headers is because the want to keep the heat in and lower the engine bay temperature.
