The 2k2+ headlight assemblies swap right out with 2k-2k1 headlights.

If they are completely legal on a 2K2-2K3 Maxima, then why wouldn't they be on yours?

Yes, DoubleA, they are completely legal. At least in NYC I know for a fact, however, thieves in NYC make them kinda illegal to own in any year car. If I remember correctly, you are in Toronto? right? I dont see why they would be a problem there. I think CAN laws are a bit more flexible than US, right?

I can imagine the scenario of getting pulled over during the evening, an officier telling me that my HID are illegal and me to say sir what's HID ? It's your cars headlight, oh I see, their brand new sir, I bought it from ABCD Nissan, and I was guaranteed it was original from Nissan and made for the Maxima ( me thinking he would not know that 2k1 came with Bronze ), the officier to say, you have a 2K1 AE maxima, yes sir, the HID Headlight came stock only in the 2k2-2k3 Maxima, so forth there illegal on your car. I will have to write you a ticket and therefore you will have to remove the headlight within 24hrs and replace it with original headlight for that particular model, then pass inspection at your local police station...but sir I cant afford to rent another car for a month. In that case my last chance would be to play the plain idiot, me to reply, sir my headlight have been stolen from my car sometime ago, I knew it was illegal to drive a car without headlight even during the day so, I called my Nissan dealer and ask them how fast they can get me the replacement headlamp. After verification the manager told me that it would take at least a month to get those cuz they were 20th anniversary edition and thus very rare. The manager then proposed me to put get me the new 2K3 headlight on my 2K1, after he had verified with the technician who confirmed they also had the harness and would only take 2 hours to install. I had no other choice sir that was the only solution I had. The officier then go in his car with my paper to came back 5 minutes later and tell me ok you can go, but please go back to the dealer to set these headlight properly, their alignment are too high.
The investment for me poor canadian is around 2300$ ( 1300$ US x 1.63 + shipping & customs ) so better be carefull than sorry. Sorry for long post.

I see what you're saying, and I understand you wanting to be careful with a $1300 investment. Anyways, if that was really true, A 2K3 HID not being legal on a 2K1, then some laws are just plain stupid and need to be changed ASAP. I'd put them on in defiance of that stupidity.

Just know that there is absolutely, positively, no way that you could get in trouble for putting 2K3 headlights on your car. I don't know what would make you even begin to think that this is conceivable.
100% LEGAL
OK
The swap is 100% legal. Since the entire assembly is manufactured by Nissan themselves and are an OEM part, there is absolutely no way for them to be illegal.
Usually with HID conversions, most people will convert their single 9004 bulb assembly over to a HID unit. What makes these conversions illegal is the fact that once you swap from 9004 to HID, you lose your High beam lights. Even if you do get pulled over, and for some reason an officer starts to hassle you about the headlights, just show him the damn stamp on the headlight housing that says "NISSAN".
I'm a cop myself, and I have never heard of anything so absurd.
