Is this true?

ON another Max forum one of the members said that he was doing 120 in his (believe 95se) Max and he knew of other people with the same car that was able to do 130 just by turning off the O/D.

Is this true? Oh, BTW, his rev limiter is removed and here is part of his statement:

"well thanx for replying but my car at 120 still on third and i was expecting it to shift to forth when i push the button , i dont have a speed limiter anymore but in the same time the damn thing doesnt work"

i did 120 in my accord when i had it, so i don't see why you couldn't hit that in a max

Maybe I need to rephrase the question or you didn't read it correctly, I wasn't asking if the Max 95se could do 120 or 130, I was questioning whether or not when you are driving the Max at top speed with the O/D on and then switched it off would that car (rev limiter removed) be able to hit 130?

In other words the member was saying or attributing the extra 10mph to the fact that he switched the O/D from on to off.

I hope this clarifies things.

With O/D off you get a better acceleration and response, but worse gas milege. I believe that you can go faster with O/D off, but in my opinion, it's better to turn it off before hitting 85mph. Once I accidentaly switched it off at 105mph and then had trouble with auto shifting until I reset the ECU.

O/D off just blocks out fourth gear. if he is in third and at high RPMs and switches O/D back on im assuming it would just shift to fourth and continue accelerating.

Well my 5th gen with the O/D on shifts ar 6K so ill be goin about 110 when it shifts to 4th, now if i shut the O/D off and let it rev to redline 6.6K it will hit 120, maybe even up to 122 but thats about all 3rd got in it. Once it goes into 4th the rpms drop to abour 4.5K and it take 4ever to rev after that.

I guess I'm the only one so far...

O/D off
3rd gear
TC locked
Hit governor at 131mph@6,5500rpms

O/D off
3rd gear
TC unlocked (Push off O/D@5,800rpms will prevent the TC from locking)
Hit 122@6,550rpms

Unless my speedo is off alot

nah it cant be the speedo, but thats wierd that ur the only 5th gen that can hit 130 in 3rd. i know the power has nothing to do with it cuz basically have the same mods as u do an a few more. Maybe its due to the TC, i dont have TC on mine so that might be the diff.

I don't think you can hit 120 with OD off? I don't recall exactly, but think my '95 SE was at something like 5k RPM in overdrive at 135. So I don't think you CAN hit 120 without the top gear.

So are you saying that you can hit 130 with the OD on?

In an automatic 4th gen Maxima, you can hit 130 mph from 3rd or 4th gear, OD on is 4th gear, OD off is 3rd gear. You will hit 130 much faster in 3rd because 4th is geared soooo long in the auto. 4th gear at redline is 170 mph, to give you an idea. Of course it will never hit redline in 4th gear.

back in 1994, I hit 120 in my 1987 Accord LXi..(downhill) and i've hit 125 in my last car...a 1998 Maxima SE (no different than the 95SE)
and I've hit 142 in my 2k3 6 speed Maxima...

I believe he hit 120...hell I hit 115 in my 98 Sentra SE

Whew! I thought I was going crazy hitting 130mph in 3rd gear

In the 5th gen, the Speedo and Tachometer should be in the same place, move at the same pace, in 3rd gear. 130mph in 3rd gear is possible as long as the O/D is off and TC is locked.
