Varible Valve Timing??
UMM>>>>>>>.
As far as I know..the VQ35DE HAS a continously valve timing....unlike hondas on/off style. It also has a variable intake runner system. It does NOT adjust the lift. I belive its just on the intake cam where the New Z should have it on both I/E and whala.....300hp
The VQ30DE just has the variable lenght intake runners.

BlackMax. None of the VQ30 have varible timing or lifts. The 92-94SE VE30 have varible valve timing on the intake cam. See my sig, you can see it there.
Mike: If the 3.5 liter has varible cam timing, it better be pushing 280hp

He is right. The 3.5L DOES have Variable Cam Timing ( Nissan Continuously Varible Valve Timing Control System ) or NCVCS. This information is straight out of the 2001 Nissan Pathfinder brochure.
Even though it only makes 240hp in the automatic form, the Variable Cam Timing is to broaden the torque band in the SUV.

Jeff.....
They use the timing to help with low end. The new qr25de(new altima and sentra se-r) has it...the current base 1.8L sentra has it also. Its not ALWAYS for high hp applications. the 1.8 makes 127hp(decent) but not meant to be a si killer. BUT it makes 127ft-lbs of torque at 2400 rpm....not 6000+ like most vtec's. The idea is to give it good low end punch...not every soccer mom/econ box driver is gonna shift at 8K.
Also..the 3.5L VQ is obviosly easily "tuned". Its 240hp with and auto....250hp with a 5sp. The new z is gonna use this engine and should be pushing 300hp....same dispacement..now blowers.
