Could those of you more educated on our brake rotor issues, please educate me on the following:

1) What (other than bad materials) causes brake rotor warpage??

2) HOw is warpage measured / determined?

3) How can warpage be prevented (if at all?)

4) Is ANYONE having this issue with 2k2's yet??

5) Is it cheaper to install aftermarket upgrade Rotors (like Brembo's)
or just go back to the OEM's??

Your help is much appreciated.

There was a link to a great site on here not to long ago regarding brakes and vibrations. The site was written by a brake guru (sort of speak.) It went on to explain what causes brake judder and ways to prevent it from happening. Much to everybodys thoughts, it's not warpage of the rotors that cause your brakes to vibrate, but rather material from your brake pads which are adheared to the surface of your rotor making it uneven. The reason why this happens was explained in detail.

If anybody can dig up that thread or has the link, please post that here. Actually it would be nice if that link or the info from that site could be posted in a sticky someplace here. That was some very good reading material.

1. Very hard driving and breaking. Not allowing brakes to cool down properly after hard driving.

2. A run out gauge is used to measure variations in rotor surface.

3. Drive your car sanely unless on a road course. If you are going on a road course consider upgrading pads and to possibly going to larger rotors or getting some stock sized slotted and cross drilled rotors. For example: Brembos, Stillens, etc.

4. I'll let the the 2003 owners answer this as I drive a 1997.

5. There is a Group Deal on the Forum for 4th gen and 5th gen up to and including 2002s on Brembo Rotors. $220 plus shipping for your choice of 4 ( 2 front and 2rear) Slotted, Cross Drilled and Slotted, Cross Dimpled and Slotted or Plain surface Rotors. These are cadmium plated as well. There have been competitive group deals in the past but they never included 5th gens but this one does. You can use search to find it. IMHO the Brembo and Stillen rotors are superior to OEM rotors and if you shop carefully less costly!

6. If you have the $$$ the Goodridge Stainless Steel Brake lines are a worthwhile investment.

7. WWW.eatricezone.com offers an excellent package of rotors, pads, brake lines and Motul Brake Fluid at an excellent price!

I am not an expert on rotors at all, but I have also had zero problems. My 2001 had over 52000 miles and the rotors just started to warp when I traded it in. My 2003 now has 22000 miles and there are no signs of warping.

The only thing I do different than alot of people is torque my own wheels. That is, I never use an impact wrench on my car. I rotate my own tires and when the dealer has to remove my wheels, I take my torque wrench with me and loosen and correctly torque the lugs before I leave the lot.

Also, I try my best not to drive through big puddles with hot rotors. That may be an old wives tale, but if you've ever seen steam coming off hot rotors, it just can't help things.
