question... The 2001 Maxima is claiming 227 hp as opposed to 2Ks 222 hp, where EXACTLY is this extra boost coming from? Exhaust is what I was thinking, care to fill me in?

Thanks.

20th Anniversary Limited Edition

The 227 hp is ONLY for the 20th Anniversary Limited Edition maximas (only 10,000 being made) and yes the 5 extra hp are the result of the I30's muffler being used on the max. All other maxs (SE, GLE, GXE) will be putting out 222 hp. You can check out pictures of the Limited Edition max at http://www.nissannews.com.

Sure about the muffler?

For 2000 the Infiniti and Maxima muffler have the same exact part #. 20100-3Y370 Nissan CalSonic The 2001 brochure says something about freer flowing exhaust, but nothing about the muffler. I would be willing to bet that the limited edition has the same muffler has 2000. Anyone want to take the bet?

Here is a quote from Nissan...

"Since 1995, Maxima has been known for its V6 engine superiority. Its innovative 3.0-liter powerplant has been named one of the "10 Best Engines" by Ward's Auto World for six consecutive years. Ward's editors have written that it is "simply, the best V6 engine available in America." For 2001, engine horsepower of the 3.0-liter V6 in the SE 20th Anniversary Edition model has been increased by five, for a total of 227. This was achieved through a new exhaust system featuring a new muffler with downward facing pipes. "

Looks like the muffler may be the same but there probably is some more tuning in the exhaust system itself..

This info is a repeat of the 2000 data. Just because misinformation is repeated, doesn't make it true. Maybe they did something with the B pipe. As soon as a limited rolls into my dealer, I'll get the part # off the muffler to confirm.

I always thought both the Maxima and I30 had the same mufflers, and the only difference is some subtle ECU tuning on the I30 for the 5hp difference. If you look at both the I30 and Maxima brochures, they have the same picture for the dual pipe, valved muffler.

perhaps there really is no difference in the 227 HP models as opposed to the 222 HP models but nissan wanted more reason to explain the price difference so it rated them differently?

Don't mean to hijack this post. If a change in muffler is 5hp, then roughly (and I emphasize this) how much horsepower does a Greddy II or other "big name" mufflers increase horsepower? All things remaining the same except for an intake that is.

I've always wondered this. If it is a significant increase, I may actually consider getting these exhaust because mine is starting to look like it'll need replacing.

The muffler does not add 5hp. I assume this is when Nissan got the bright idea to lie about HP numbers.

Most catback systems will add 5-10hp. Muffler alone will add 0-2hp.

The B-pipe is the only difference. Different part number same as the I30."More free flowing."
