why?

I had one on my BMW, and it was totally useless. The needle swung wildly (0mpg when accelerating, 40+ when coasting). More useful was the on-board computer, which tracked mpg on a cumulative basis. (Like the Maxima's trip odometer, there were 2 calculations, so I used 1 to calculate mpg for my current fill-up, and the other to calculate mpg since the car was built.)

just cause

something useless but cool to have in a car.. i had a jeep grand cherokee that had it, and my sister's m3 has it and my dad's s class has it but my lovely max doesn't have it yet.. it'll aslo help my driving habits. good thing to monitor.. if the thing reads 10mpg half the time then i know something is wrong.

I don't think you can do it. I checked my BMW catalogues, and nobody markets an aftermarket version of the gauge. In thinking about it more, the gauge has to interconnect with the tachometer and odometer cables, and be calibrated for the wheel diameter. The only way you can probably get one is to buy a completely new instrument cluster for vehicle, and it may be difficult for it to fit in the Maxima's dash or be properly calibrated...

I had one in my Olds Calais I-Series

It annoyed the hell out of me. I felt like I was being watched and nagged. It's useful for giving you data back, but most of the time I didn't want to know. It also had an annoying upshift light.

hmmm.. just do it on a calculator

fill up your tank.
write down your milage.
or set your trip meter to 0

next time you fill up your tank:
how many gallons did you use ?
(current milage) - (previous milage) = ___ (or trip meter reading)

then

miles / gallons = miles per gallon of gas
miles / $spent on gas = miles per dollar

etc.

...

not trying to make anyone feel stupid or anything....
just being a math nut...
