"Anti-lock brake warning light (if so equipped)"
They are referring to whether you have the light, not whether you have ABS or not.

I think he was refering the the SRS system. (Air Bags)
By law, they come on all new vehicles unless they are over a certain weight. The big Ford, Chevy & Dodge trucks do not require air bags, although some have them as an option.

According to your manual on page 2-9,
"Anti-lock brake warning light (if so equipped)"

No, they are referring to whether or not you have ABS. The ABS is optional, not the ABS light. If you have ABS, you have the light. Same thing with traction control. How else would the average driver know there was a malfunction without the idiot light?

look at pages 2-9 and 5-19 (this is a 2000 car so make sure you read the right manual).
I don't know why the light wouldn't be there, but the ABS is.
Even 2000 GXE's had it standard...

I know what the manual says, I own a 2000 Maxima. I wonder if his light is burned out. All I am saying is if ABS is standard on every 2000 model, you have to have the light for diagnostic purposes, correct? Maybe the manual is incorrect? I would love to see a pic of this guys dash with all of the warning lights illuminated.

You got me. Perhaps a cost cutting oversight for early model runs? Maybe early models only had the standard brake warning light come on and that would prompt a service call?
Who knows.

My other car's ABS system has a sperate ABS ECU and it can throw readable malfunction codes (i.e. a sensor bad on a certanin wheel). It's definitely not part of the engine ECU, it's seperate, and codes can be read with a special tool.
I'm not sure if that's the case with the max, but I would lean in that diretion without knowing for sure.
