ABS is an option. It's not required by law.

According to your manual on page 2-9,

"Anti-lock brake warning light (if so equipped)"

They are referring to whether you have the light, not whether you have ABS or not.

I think he was refering the the SRS system. (Air Bags)

By law, they come on all new vehicles unless they are over a certain weight. The big Ford, Chevy & Dodge trucks do not require air bags, although some have them as an option.

But it also say that for traction control and limited slip, meaning if the car is equipped with the options themselves, not the light. But everything points to ABS being standard on a 2K Maxima, so I am confused. Why have ABS without the light? How would you know when there was a malfunction without the idiot light?

Read the manual.

http://www.nissan-techinfo.com/

look at pages 2-9 and 5-19 (this is a 2000 car so make sure you read the right manual).

I don't know why the light wouldn't be there, but the ABS is.

Even 2000 GXE's had it standard...

when my mom bought her 99 camry, it was an option only. We had to decide between the cd/cassette player with power seats and other toys, or just ABS. You can guess which one I voted for, but my mom voted for safety. Oh well.

I know what the manual says, I own a 2000 Maxima. I wonder if his light is burned out. All I am saying is if ABS is standard on every 2000 model, you have to have the light for diagnostic purposes, correct? Maybe the manual is incorrect? I would love to see a pic of this guys dash with all of the warning lights illuminated.

You got me. Perhaps a cost cutting oversight for early model runs? Maybe early models only had the standard brake warning light come on and that would prompt a service call?

Who knows.

You've got me too... I have a 6/99 production date and have the light, so I don't know.

Guess it will remain one of the mysteries of our time.

I'd agree there, I think if it has ABS it would absolutely need a malfunction light because ABS *usually* has its own seperate ECU.

My other car's ABS system has a sperate ABS ECU and it can throw readable malfunction codes (i.e. a sensor bad on a certanin wheel). It's definitely not part of the engine ECU, it's seperate, and codes can be read with a special tool.

I'm not sure if that's the case with the max, but I would lean in that diretion without knowing for sure.

Just to add some more confusion to this topic, when I leased my 1998 Civic EX coupe, brand new, the 5-speed version, you couldn't get ABS on it, nor was it required by law.
