Help w/ Buying a Maxima

Hi there-
I have posted a WTB post in the other section, but- I am wondering a few things. This is my first car I've ever purchased- I've always owned a truck. I've fallen in love with the Maxima, specifically the 2000+ model w/ dark grey paint, but I need to know what I should look for when purchasing. I would like to buy from an individual rather than a dealer since I assume it will be a little cheaper that way. Can you guys point out things that I should look for- maybe common problems in Maximas, mileages, etc?

Also- why is it soo difficult to find used Maximas? There's SOME out there, but- not many at all (my 2nd choice is Honda Accord, and there's TONS of those for sale). Is there a reason for this? Any suggestions on where to look (besides autotrader and the paper?)
thanks guys, I love the forum, and can't wait to start driving/customizing my new maxima- if I can even find it!

If you are trying to buy local I would stay close to dealers and watch their used inventory and be patient. See if newspapers just outside of your area have websites and watch their classifieds on line. If you are willing to travel I would think Southern California would have a large volume of cars. Try recycler.com. Buying a used Max would be the same as any car, have it checked by a pro before you commit. Do a search and you will find common problem areas on Maxs. Good luck.

WOW! Thanks for the tips! I never heard of recycler.com yet- checking it out now. I'll gladly drive to S Cal- no prob! Is there any websites/papers that are local to S Cal I can check online?

Here's another q- I REALLY like the dark grey color- but it's hard to find with all the stuff I want with it in the price range I want. How bad is it to try to get a new paint job put on it? Will dealer's do this?

Also- can someone break down the differences between the GXE/GLE/SE models? Are the engines the same? What's the differences?

What's your thoughts on buying from a dealer? Is it worth the extra cost, or, are they that much more expensive to begin with? Thanks for any/all help- I'm getting SOO EXCITED to buy my Max!!!

1) Try cars.com or even auto trader and enter a L.A. zip code this will give you cars for sale in the area. Cars.com compiles ads from newspapers in the area you specify.

2)Do not repaint the car a different color. It is a huge mistake. There are too many reasons to list. Just don't do it.

3) All models have the same engine, but differ in trim. GXE is base with generally few options (but not always). SE sport trim with stiffer suspension (marginally). GLE is luxury, ususally decked out with leather and everything.

4) Dealer will cost more but may have what you want. With your level of emotion you will probably pay too much. What I mean is that in order to get the best deal you have to be willing to get up and leave at any time.

Remember any time you need info related to the Max do a search for the info first. Chances are that somebody has asked the question before. There is a ton of info available that way. Good luck.

5spd maximas are usually ones hard to find. Just be aware that these cars are driven hard because of their sweet engine, so treat every car with great suspision. Get a Max with lowest mileage possible, and learn about the previous owner.

yes, Im looking for the lowest mileage possible. I have found that some of these cheap deals are due to salvage title- which is not an option for me. I am also leaning towards the SE package.

Also- I wasnt sure I could search this forum- sorry if I have repeated here...
Thanks a ton!
