What Tint % Should I get?

I have a black on black 2K1 AE. I'm gonna be gettin' my tint this friday. What's a good tint percentage to get? I was thinkin' about 20% all around. Is that too dark?

Way too dark. Go with 35%.

I have 18% and I get complements all the time. It goes wonderfully with the dark grey. Just if you ever get pulled over, roll down your windows. 20% is illegal.

Exactly. 20% looks super, but it's dangerous at night. Too hard to see out of your car, not to mention that it's illegal. 35% looks great too, and it's nice and safe. That's what I would recommend.

I have 5% percent tints all around... Looks tight, but little hard to see out of the side windows... But had it on for a 1 year and no problems, especially with pigs... they only pull you over if your driving stupid or they don't have anything to do...

Is 35% legal limit for every state? I thought it was illegal in michigan to get your windows tinted period. can anyone verify?

I have 20% in the front and 15% in the rears.. Pretty much as long as a cop can see the driver/passenger through the windows then he won't harass you..

I am running 20% in the back & rear windows and 35% in the front.
In some lighting conditions you cannot even tell the difference.
I love it and it looks good.
In IL it is illegal to have any tint in the front.
When I got pulled over ( For a dark licence plate cover ) I just rolled down my driverside window and said nothing about the windows.
He also bugged me about no plate on the front of my car but that was it.
If I had to do it again this is what I would do.
With the 35% on front you can still see your side mirrors at night with the 20% it is hard.

tints

I have seen some of the ugly tints that are purple in color which gets on my nerves. I saw a bunch of you had the one that looks black. Is there a certain name or type for those? What kind of warantee do they usually include? Thanks.

Tint Laws

When I get my car tinted, it's going to be 20% in the back and 50 in the front. Its illegal in my state to have any tint on the drivers window and the passengers window. I can have as much tint as I want on the back though.

I am still debating because a 20/50 combo may look weird.

Ditto!

I went with 20% the first time and I hated it. You could see in the car and with my frost interrior it was even worse. I scrapped it and went with a 5% and could not be happier. Sometimes it's hard to see out at night on a dark street, but most of my driving is done looking out the windsheild.

If anything, I would not go higher than 15% as it looks like $hit in my opinion...almost just like the windows are dirty.

As far as the "purple" that happens with lighter colors of "smoke" and when it ages due to sun exposure. If you really want black, you have to go with a darker %.

i'm thinkin' that 20% could be too dark... don't want any unnecessary problems with the cops. I thinkin' maybe 30% all around. I hate the look of different tint % in the front and back.

get 100% metallic (don't worry, it's not the silver mirror tint) FormulaOne tint..it's guaranteed not to fade (won't turn ugly-purple) and it has a lifetime guarantee on it also...that's what i have on mine.18%... it's a little pricey, but i would rather pay a little more to get tint that'll last than to have to redo it. if ur in GA, go to solarworks in duluth (ask for dewayne).

The purple color is caused by repeatedly using a window cleaner that contains amonia.

Not true...it is also that the material just has a tendency to fade, regardless of cleaner used.

you can do 20% all around, and then what i suggest, do 15% in the rear. reason is because looking through the side windows, the background is gonna be another tinted window (driver side looking into passenger side and vice versa) but looking from the rear windsheild, the background is the front windshield, so it might not look as dark as the other windows. i put 20 all around and 15 rear and the added 5% in the rear evened everything up...pics:

I have 35% all around. It's not that dark but I don't have to worry about being pulled over. If I was to tint my max over again, I would probably go with 30%.

Call me paranoid but i never roll down my windows all the way down. I turn on all the interior lights for the cop to see fine, but i only roll down enough to slide the license and registration through. In case the cop decides to go postal and shoot, there will be enough evidence to suggest that he shot first. He won't be able to say that i had a gun and fired first because the broken glass will be in my car.

That's both paranoid and twisted.

agreed. something else you can do is pull open the sunroof. that would make the inside of the car look lighter as more light is coming in.

this should read "go as dark as you can and are willing to throw that money away" because if you get a ticket you're gonna have to peel it all off... or if your state won't let you pass inspection because of tint you're gonna have to peel it all off...

I got 50% in the front and 35% rear. In direct sunlight it's not dark but it still looks pretty good. Also, it passes inspection, cops don't notice it, and I'm never gonna have to ever peel it all off.

Maybe it depends on the type of tint. But i used some regular glass cleaner on my back window before it hit me that it was the wrong the stuff. Needless to say my rear window turned a little purple and i had to replace it.

Each state will have a different limit. For instance I live in PA and the legal here is 70%(might as well not tint).

I have been pulled over, ticketed and given a notice to remove for 35% tint. Large cities the cops seem to be busier and generally do not pull you over. I live in a rural are and they hammer everyone ( just doing their jobs). Generally your local tint shop will have you sign a waiver if the tint they are applying exceeds are limits.

My opinion from experiencing all applications first hand:

35% - daytime: see in fairly easy
see out easy

- nightime: see in objects as a silhouette
see out fairly easy

- appearance: classy on most cars, afraid to go 20% on others

20% - daytime: see in objects as a silhouette
see out fairly easy

- nightime: see in objects outlined
see out some difficulty

- appearance: badasss on most cars, afraid to go 5% on others

5% - daytime: see in objects outlined
see out some difficulty

- nightime: see in impossible
see out very difficult

- appearance: real badass on most cars, ghetto on others

Remember, this is only my opinion, others may disagree.

Agreed. My local tinting shop has this thing called titanium tinting. They guarantee you that it will never turn purple in next 5 years or they redo the tinting for free. I do believe some cheap tints fade very easily no matter how you care for it.

Did you use a national 'chain' or a locally owned shop? If a chain, may I ask which?

i have 35% all around, and its nice but i wish i could have had the 20%. Since thats illegal here in NH, however, and i had the rear windows professionally done, they wouldnt do anything below 35%. But it still looks pretty cool. ON my old car i had 5% on the back windows (did it myself) and it was too dark. Looked nice from outside, but you couldnt see out the windows in the night, and it wasnt that easy durin the day either. I ran a crotch rocket off the road once cause i couldnt see him.... felt really bad, so i decided never again would i go that dark

It's interesting that this topic came up since I am thinking about the same thing. I am having my windows tinted tomorrow. My Max is Satin Blue Pearl and I was thinking of either going 20% all around, 5% strip on the front or I might go 20% on back and rear windows, and 35% on the front. Another way to make the car seem darker (at least it's legal here from what I understand) is do 35% all around, except also put a 50% film on the front window. That way your tint is completely legal but seems darker. I have had 3 cars previously tinted. In my experience 35% all around is way too transparent. 20% may be a little dark. I think the 20% rear and 35% front works well. I had this done in a white Max and it looked good. Anyhow, I still haven't decided what I'm gonna do yet. I have until tomorrow morning
