Got pulled over, but no ticket

I got pulled over today, just after I watched a movie on every other Fridays. I was making a left turn and there are two lanes that can turn left. The light was turning yellow, so I quickly take the outter (second from the left) lane and cuts into the inner lane. If you play Gran Turismo 3, you know what I'm talking about. So then after another traffic light, I noticed this police car behind me. I was thinking... WTF? I'm in deep $hit! I finally got pulled over. The police explained that I had made an illegal lane change and running a red light. But I was lucky to have insurance and license and registration with me. Fortunately, I didnt get a ticket. Instead, the police guy told me to be more careful. HOW SWEET!

PS: I noticed that during the pull over, he kept my driver's license for a while. He also had this notepad with him. I think he just wrote down my driver's license number or something. Is this what a police usually do? Give a warning, keep a record and give a ticket the next time?

I think its just the Seattle police, or I should say Pudget Sound cops.
I have gotten pulled over about 4 times in the past year and half of being here and got off with warnings every time. I think once you're cooperative, your stuff is straight and you haven't done anything too bad they will let you go.

I'll tell you right now that's how I work. I'll usually stop a car for some BS crap like that too. If the driver doesn't have warrants, inspection, registration, DL, and insurance are all clear, and the driver doesn't start talking $hit, then it's "Don't do it again" and get on your way. It's the best way to get compliance and a few warrant arrests while your at it. Granted, you'll definately think twice before doing that again. Right.

he was probably looking for a drunk or something. Your illegal lane change gave him a reason to pull you over. Once he saw that you were ok and not wanted, he cut you loose.

So if I happen to break the law again, in the future, and able to provide license and registration, can I get away again like this time, or am I guaranteed a ticket by ?
