VQ35 News....

According to SCC( ) the 2004 Maxima base SL model will have a 4-speed automatic, while the SE will have a 5-speed automatic. Hopefully, the 4spd is similar to the current 2K2-2K3 auto and the 5spd is EXACTLY like the G35 trans with better gearing. Just incase some of you diehard autoMAGIC guys run out of things to mod.

According to Turbo & High-Tech Performance the JDM company "TOP SECRET" has a turbo with titanium exhaust manifolds for the 350Z(only of course!), HOWEVER more importantly they also have "Z33 VQ35" camshafts.

Just my .02 on some possibilities in the future.

Also im sure some1 here is gonna try to G-rig the 350Z SC to the 3.5 motor as well, but nice thinkin about the 5spd auto.

Yup finally us 3.5L guys will finally have some MAJOR options comming..i know HKS/impul/top secret/jun will ALL have motor goodies for the 3.5L. Hopefully by next year we'll have upgraded internals/cams etc. Now my only question is. What do i upgrade my clutch/flywheel etc to? Im not sure if this has been an issue yet. But im just wondering what I should save my money for.

Once they hit showrooms, DAVEB should be able to answer that.

All he has to do is verify the 4spds are the same as the current 4spds, if so, I'd be willing to bet on it.

I already have listings on '04 Maxima parts. I dunno about "pop right in", but in the illustration the 5AT looks virtually identical to the 6th gen 4AT. The picture of the 5th gen 4AT is so vague, it's hard to draw any conclusions. I would guess it would be a project for an individual who is neither faint of heart or wallet! Oh yeah, the trans itself is $2900.

Dave,

Is the '04 Maxima SL(base model) 4-speed auto the same part number as the current '02-03 Maxima 4-speed?

If so, then I believe the '04 Maxima SE 5-speed auto(also G35?) will also be interchangable with the '02-03 Maximas.

hasn't been brought up yet bro, but i'm already thinking about it. for the 6-speed guys, my rpm is REAL slow changing gears. wondering what an upgraded flywheel would do. but first, i wanna upgrade to at least a stage 2 clutch. but as of yet, i don't know anyone releasing one yet.

I've been giving thought about trying a 5spd auto swap soon, but I imagine there'd have to be some ecu changes as well to incorporate the addition of a 5th gear? It seems like it'll take quite a bit more than it seems.. $2900 is about $1k more than I thought, but it'd be cool to try. Dave, do you think the svc dept at Town North would be able to attempt the swap if I wanted to give it a go? I'd be willing to be the test monkey on this one..

I do not think the Clutch will be much of an issue for the 3.5 guys, if u recall SR20DEN had over 100+shot of N20 and he said the clutch was showing no signs of even coming close to slipping. Its true the 2k2 has some faults like he MAf as u know and some clutches here and there, but when they get it right they get it right and some of the clutches in the 2k2 just grip and dont let go. Eventually ACT will come out with somethingas well.

Ice- The '04 4AT is a different part # from the 02-03 4AT.

ducky- The more I look into this, the less plausible it seems. The $500 trans conrol unit would have to be replaced, and who knows if the wiring is similar. The shift cable stuff looks different, too. I doubt our guys would want to take a stab at it. Maybe you should look out for the first totalled '04!

Not many people follow Kevs' route and go BRAND NEW, they will be checking the junk yards. So, they will be scrounging all the additional controllers/sensors as a package.

How about the axles? Are they the same?

Here's the thread where I posed the 4 speed to 5 speed swap question. Of particular interest is where SteVTEC responds after running a simulation for performance gains.

well, considering steve's cartest simulation is close enough to accurate to go by, it's probably more money than it's worth for just a couple tenths of a second.

Axles are different too! The hubs are the same, tho. Most of the other front suspension parts are pure Altima.

That's what I figured, since they are off the same platform.

However, the AWD Murano is also off the Altima and 2004+ Maxima platform. Too bad the engine is mounted different!

1/4-mile times are not everything and .24 seconds is nothing to balk at. Once you hit 4th gear it should make even a bigger difference.

exactly, 1/4-miles are NOTHING compared to the obvious enjoyment factor in driving a 5AT (ala my TL-S) vs. the bland and boring (w/ horrible shift points) 4AT maxima. Just playing around w/ the TL-S 5AT SS is a lot more fun in itself in that I have more aggressive gearing down low .. though the 4th and 5th gearing is kinda bland... though the Accord has a revised 4th and 5th gearing w/ the same 1st through 3rd gearing.

Well....

It appears Steve has been busy comparing the '04 Maxima 6spd, 5spd auto, and 4spd auto:
http://forums.maxima.org/showthread....hreadid=192726

Now if 2K2-2K3 4spd auto guys could swap the 5spd auto, but keep their final drive.....hmmmmmn.

Now that could be interesting!
