Getting Timing Advanced, I have a question…
I was at a local dealership today and I talked to a mechanic about advancing my timing 3 degrees (to 17btdc). The mechanic said he could do it with their Consult II for $45, but he wasn’t sure if it would stay at 17btdc. He said it might go down after a while. Also, he said my car might ping. From what I’ve read it seems to stay set at 17btdc so I’m not to worried but the mechanic had one important question.
He wants to know if he needs to reset the “Self Learn” function. I showed him the Target ignition timing adjustment sheet from THIS link (he knew exactly what it was and how to change it) but he said he didn’t know if he should reset the self learn, which is in a different section under “Work Support”. So do I need to reset that or should I leave it alone?

If he is willing to perform the Idle Air Volume Learning procedure at 17-degrees for the $45, then you should have him ATTEMPT to go to 18-20 degrees just to see if it's possible.
He can ALWAYS change it back to 17 once he is done. Good luck!

No. He is worried about the Idle Air Volume Learing procedure. However, it appears to not be necessary unless you go 18 degrees or higher.

(if that makes a differance). Also, has anyone done this yet? Is there a chance of damaging anything by putting it too high?

My reasoning has to do with possible warranty issues if anything goes wrong with the engine. Obviously, Nissan cannot void your warranty if your timing advance is set within factory spec. But if it's not . . .

Igor911,
Timing advance is supposed to improve your midrange (2500-4000). A bunch people have done this and said they felt a differance so i though i would give it a try.

You should call different dealers in your area and see what kind of resistance if any that you get. Just tell them you want to advance the timing and see what their reaction is.
I did get some negative feedback from one dealer near my house. It was 3:40PM and I told them I wanted the timing advanced. The guy straight up said he didn't have time and I explained it was only a 20-30 minute job. Their service bays were pretty much empty too. He just kept saying no, but oh well it could have been that he wanted to go home right at 4...lazy. Oh well...

The service advisor was actually really cool with it, he didn't give me any flack about it at all. He used to be a tech in that same dealership so he probably knew exactly what I was talking about.

I agree with you on advancing beyond 17 for a 2k.
I wonder though, assuming it is possible to advance beyond that through the idle relearn, is there a device that would allow you to see if you are getting knock - since you can't always hear it?

20-degrees is possible, you just need to perform the PROPER procedure. 17 vs. 20 will probably not make much difference, but until someone actually dynos this mod, we don't even know if 14/15 vs. 17 does anything FOR SURE.
Butt dynos are like azzholes, everyones got one.
