Got rear-ended by a 17 yr old punk azz
If this is a repost, I surely can't find the original. 2-28, last Friday I got rearended, when I was slowing down for upcoming traffic. Insurance estimate details atleast $3,500. He was looking at something on the side of the road, then looked back toward the road, and BAM! Smashed into the back of me. It looks like I'm gonna get those SE tails after all...
. I would post pics, but I don't have a personal website, and apparently I can't transfer them from my home computer. Enterprise was gonna give me a Sunfire
, Cavalier, or Focus. They couldn't find the keys, so they gave me a Chevy Malibu. I guess I was the victim of those accidents that kids get into right after they get their license. I hope his rates go sky high

I'm 19 and i agree that kids drive stupidly. i've almost been hit uncountable times by kids driving (i try really hard to drive like a normal person) i used to be one of the idiots out there, but came to a realization that its stupid! i refuse to ride with almost any of my friends cause i dont trust their driving. i drive all the time, unless my girlfriend drives us, thats ok too. otherwise, i've almost died too many times when other kids are behind the wheel. just today i saw this stupid kid in a riced out celica floor his car to go about 50 feet, then lock up all his wheels to stop for the stopsign/crosswalk, then floor it again to go the other 150 feet to the next stop sign. i dont ever want him driving behind me

insurance companies don't charge you out the wazoo because they know 19y.o. drivers can afford it, they charge your age group so much BECAUSE statistically that age group is the one involved in the accidents.
short story, you're being charged so much because the insurance company is betting you'll wreck your car or someone else's pretty soon.
and find a dictionary and look up "actuary." That's the person who figured all this stuff out. (edit: http://www.m-w.com ... it's definition number 2)

I think most of them grow out of streetracing after their mid 20's. Or in my case, after a near fatal acident.

On thing that upsets me about this is that when I was going to high school I was working 40 hours a week to pay for stuff and my grades weren't the best as a result. I'm not sure if it's you Igor911, but I thought you said that both your parents were doctors which enabled you not to work and concentrate on school. Don't get me wrong, you will turn out better for it...but should someone who has to work to pay their own way be punished with higher rates because they are not on the dean's list?
I don't mean to flame at you (and forgive me if you are not the one with 2 doctors for parents) but rather the insurance companies.
Having said that, I was a nut when I was younger...amazing I'm still alive. Now I'm still a nut but my ***** have shrunk. I will give up a race if there is the slightest chance of a scratch on my car
Well...
spta97: It's real simple. If you get good grades, that shows a level of responsibility that kids who get poor grades don't have.
My personal opinion is that it's asinine to let an inexperienced (less than 100,000 miles) driver unsupervised behind the wheel of a car like the Maxima. It's a tricky car to drive if you don't know what you're doing (mostly due to the torque steer), and requires a level of maturity that kids often don't have.
I'm 29, and believe me, it wasn't *that* long ago I was in some of you guys' shoes. I almost got myself killed several times learning to drive, and that was in a POS 1983 Pontiac 6000 (slow *** 4 banger.. for that car 55 was a goal, not a speed limit).
I have no doubt some of you are decent drivers (if you think you are, you aren't, particularly if you have tickets), but you unfortunately have to pay for the immaturity of your peers. Part of the high insurance you pay is to dissuade you from driving a high-performance vehicle - the real expense to insurance companies in accidents aren't the cars themselves, but the people you kill and injure and compensating your victims' families.
Street racing is no different than waving a loaded gun in a crowd of people. Maybe someone will get hurt, maybe not, but it is an unnecessary risk that will land you in prison for a *long* time if things go bad.

I too, am one of those younger drivers who get caught in the trap of being young and "irresponsible" on the roads. I don't like it, I don't agree with it, however, posts like the one I referred to do nothing to help our case.
That was the only opinion I was expressing.

To The older People: Don't strees the younger org. members with there harsh remarks, but yes young people are always getting stereotyped DWY.... Driving While YOUNG>>.. Anyways, you older people do not no everything, because no matter how much you know, someone else will always no more and that goes for all age categories.
To the younger People: I am 20 going on to 21 and let me tell you, when I was 16 and 17, I thought I was the shiet and was the king of the world and new everything, but unfortunatly that all came to and end soon... I grew up and became more responsible... Just take it easy... I also had some help with cops harrasing me and giving me fix it tickets on MY Civic and speeding of course... Oh well, its just the wonderful things you have to deal with being young... Don't worry in a couple of years and some college, light will dewell on you...
And in no way, am I say to slow down and drive like a granny, but no your limitations... If you see traffic ahead, no sense in speeding... No if its 1 or 2 in the morning on the freeway and some one wants to prove a Maxima wrong, show him whats up! Other than that, just be cautious and take it easy and be a consederate driver...

having said that, 'punk azz' is probably pretty fitting. I mean, he did rear-end the guy didn't he? You should be ****ed at the punk-azz 17 year old for making your age group look bad, not at adamlee2001GXE for calling him that.
last, you're making a common mistake with your 'who drives more' question. Even if all 16-19 year olds doubled how much they drive, there are 10x more 'adults' (20-54) so an individual teen might drive more than an individual adult, but as a group (and that's how statistics are gathered) they don't drive anywhere near the amount of miles 'adults' do. You're also leaving out people who drive for a living (adults mostly).
http://www.nhtsa.dot.gov/people/inju...ub/yorept.html
go there and click on "chapter 1"... read, look at the graphs. It shows "miles driven by age" and "accidents by age." Sobering stuff.
wow, I start this thread about getting rear-ended, and it blows up like wildfire, about irresponsible, immature, know-it-all teenage drivers. All I meant was, every single person I know has a when I got my license story...I was the person that got smacked into.
I say let him (adamlee) vent cause of the incident, after all, he is the one who has to pay the price for getting his car hit for no admitted fault of his own...I would be ****ed too and if I had to take it out metaphorically, I would categorize just the same...
no different from the jacka$$ that cut in front of my wife two years ago and damn near killed her from driving erratically. I will not categorize by the make of car but the nature of the character...even though the driver had no insurance on him and the car he was driving was not his and the owner had no insurance either ...
neither of those things would make someone drive any more attentive...but does not prevent law-abiding safety concious drivers from tearing them a new **** when they involve us against our will in mishaps.

Tickets, at least speeding, have nothing to do with driving skill, I believe. The only connection I can make is tickets = speeding = dangerous = accident.
Just my .02 as a 17 yr old. And I have the good student discount

aquiring driving skills doesn't happen over night nor does it happen after a couple of months, it takes a great deal of driving over a number of years. I myself have been driving for 3 years now and I have around 35,000 miles under my belt. To date I have 2 speeding tickets and 4 accidents (2 minor, 1 bad, 1 $4000) After I recieved my second speeding ticket for doin 85 in a 50 the judge decided to take my license away for a month. That was the best thing that has happened to me (with my license) because in that month I realized how much I need to drive and by doing what I did, I put my life and other lives in danger. Also, during that month, one weekend my whole family went on vacation while I had to stay home with no license and I was sick as a dog, without anywhere to go or anyone to take me there. When most kids first get their license they think they're on top of the world as in nothing could happen to them. Well they're wrong and they haven't realized it yet but they will when something like this happens. I'm very fortunate to have learned the right way in a most unfortunate way.
Most kids are like this, but then there are some kids that are good drivers. But there usually the ones that don't have their own car. These kids that are spoiled and drive Maxima's, BMW's, Audi's, Honda, MB's are usually out there (on the road) to prove that they're "cooler" than the kid in the lane next to them. And when this "cooler" kid next to em proves em wrong thats when kid A gets all p/o'd and drives like a maniac putting other drivers on and off the road in harms way. What they haven't learned yet is the ability to accept defeat.
There are a lot of people that have worked really hard to get their cars, they have sacraficed a lot to get it and then to throw it away doing something stupid to prove what. To prove that that person is immature. So what if someone drives a nicer car, has a louder radio system, or beats you in a race. SO WHAT. Throwing all that hard work away for something as stupid as that is pointless. When you're older and by yourself on a tighter budget, you'll appreciate those things that are given to you and those things that you have.
As far as getting good grades, that has absolutly nothing to do with driving whatsoever. The statistic of kids being worse drivers than those that are older is because kids tend to look around at their surroundings, looking at people passing them by and this is the most common thing, looking at guys/girls on the side of the road. I know when I first got my license my dad told me that I wasn't to have anyone in the car with me so that I could learn to drive without distraction from inside the cab. Everyone get a rubber neck every once and a while, and it's what causes most traffic, everyone slowing down to look at the accident on the side of the road, everyone does it. But when you do this it's just like reading while driving, where your eyes are off the road for more time than they're supposed to be and thats what causes accidents.
For those people in this thread that are young, try evaluating your situation. You have a car ( and a nice one at that ), most of you said that you get good grades, which means you'll get into a good college and get a good job afterwards. Most of you probably have girlfriends (or a wife where applicable). You also probably have loving parents and other people that respect you. Now why would you wanna risk losing that all, cause I know I certainly don't want to lose any of it
now I know i've gone a little off the subject with this, but this isn't just for you, tell your friends. Remind them that they drive like a maniac or the drive unsafe and that it'll only lead to trouble down the road (no pun intended).
and one other thing to all the young'ns ... listen to people that are older than you, they are only trying to help
btw adam, how's the car now?

The kid didn't seem to care much at all that he killed the woman, but he was getting good grades so I guess it doesn't matter

That same night he went to a party, one week later his parents bought him a brand new SAAB. Seems to me like despite his good grades, he was not responsible at all.

One anecdote does not mean anything. It's sad and tragic (that kid's parents should be shot), but meaningless statistically.
Seriously, use common sense. If you have a group of 'D' students and a group of 'A' students, who do you think the more responsible group is going to be? You're always going to have aberrations like your Saab guy, but think about it. It takes a responsible, determined person to keep their grades up. Notice I didn't say "intelligent", because in high school that means little.
Driving is all about realizing the consequences of your actions, and assuming the responsibility of being behind a ton and a half of steel. Doing well in school obviously isn't a perfect correlation, but it's no different than them giving discounts to married people or being 25 or older (at least in Michigan, YMMV). The company's assumption of risk is less, and working hard in school is just one small piece taken out of your insurance bill.

Thanks for asking, I just dropped it off at the body shop on Fri. Which when you think about it, from the time I got hit, and the time it went into the shop, was only a week, which was respectable. Considering meeting with the insurance adjuster, finding a body shop, and arranging for a rental. I assume it will take a week to fix: New trunk, bumper & cover, SE tails, and blending the paint from the back to the roof of the car, since there are no "break points" or quarter-panel sections.

I think a parent takes a risk when they give an inexperienced kid a high-performance sport sedan. Personally, my kids are getting either a heavily used Ford Crown Victoria (the weak base model, of course) or Chevy Caprice. Painted flourescent orange.

people don't appreciate the things they take for granted until they're gone.
how do they afford it...
I'm much older now, but I know when I was 16-19 no way could I afford the Maxima I'm driving now. I worked in high school and college and played sports and all that crap.
The difference is my parents would not give me a car or even co-sign a loan for a car because in their opinion they would have to subsidize my use of the vehicle (i.e insurance , gas, repairs etc.).
I just can't believe how many of of these younger drivers are driving relatively more expensive cars like a Maxima. Plus they seem to have money to spend on mods.
I hope your parents are helping you with the cost of purchasing/owning these cars because over the long haul it looks to me like these kids are going to be in debt forever.
Get a cheaper car and save the money on you're spending on payments and insurance and gas - it's just a car. When you get older you can get an even better car and not worry so much about your age and your insurance and people calling you punk azz teenagers

Ok, let me chime in on this 3 pages later.
I'm 21 now, going on 22, so it wasn't that long ago that I was a "teen". Hmmm, where do I start now? Well, I ended up having my license suspended for almost a year (supposed to have been 1.5 yrs) because in MA, if you get 3 speeding tickets while you're under 18, say bye-bye to your license for 1.5 yrs. And guess what, that happened to me. Through some serious negotiation with the DMV, I was able to get my license back after 9 months, and had a cinderella license for another 6 (could only drive between 8am-8pm) months. I didn't have any accidents, and I consider myself a really good driver. I don't think you can relate speeding tickets to bad driving skills, because you can get a speeding ticket for doing 10mph over the limit, and I'm sure we've all seen areas where the speed limit is 10mph too low (i.e. road conditions allow for faster travel, but speed limit set very low). It's hard to say where speeding is equal to bad driving, because we'd all have to be there and witness the road conditions, weather, traffic, etc etc to judge whether speeding was wreckless.
As far as 17yr olds thinking they're the ****, well I agree, cause I was just like that back then. I thought I knew everything, and if not, I could BS my way through. A lot of dumb stuff happened to me during 16-18 yrs old, and that's where I learned the most through my troubles and experience. Luckily, nothing ever truly bad happened to me, and my learning experience did not cause any long-term harm to myself or others. That's the main difference in my opinion. Some people grow up during their teen years, get more mature, and start making more rational decisions, and others just never truly get older (mind still stays the same). That's the older guys who still act like 17 yr olds.
The key to being a teenager is trying to learn while minimizing harm done. I would say 95% of teenagers (at least boys) are not mature enough to handle a car responsibly at that age, but hopefully as they get older and more mature, they change their ways. If not, you end up hearing about them on the 6 o'clock news.
