Not ANOTHER exhaust thread . . .
Yep. I just have to wax poetic over my new DynoMax Super Turbo muffler. It may not be right for everyone. It's not flashy and it's only available in aluminized steel. Those of you who live in harsh climates should probably opt for SS. But for those like me who live in mild climates, the Super Turbo is just about perfect from a sound and performance standpoint on an exhaust with a Y-pipe and 2.5" piping. It's as quiet as the stock muffler with absolutely no drone in any rpm range. But it has a deeper, throatier tone. It provides 2.5" piping throughout (Dynomax P/N 17748). And it's cheap as hell! (I paid $65.00 for mine.)

Just thought you ought to know.

What about a sound clip? I've recently installed my Y/B/Cat on a 2002 SE. The MagnaFlow muffler that I had was loud as crap, so I removed it and put on a temporary one. I've got 2.5" piping from the Y all the way back. Just curious as to what it would sound like. The MagnaFlow offered crazy torque, which I liked, but the noise was unbearable.

The muffler is in the shape of a flat oval. It looks like the OEM muffler only in a scaled-down size.

The Super Turbo won't perform quite as well as a straight through muffler. Basically, it turns the exhaust flow a full 360 degrees inside the muffler itself. It therefore effectively TRIPLES THE LENGTH OF THE MUFFLER. The net result is a huge reduction in noise with no restriction to the exhaust flow other than that created by the change in direction of the flow. In my experience, the Super Turbo offers the best tradeoff between noise and performance in an aftermarket muffler. And I've got a LOT of experience with custom 5th Gen exhaust systems.

I plan on doing my own catback shortly. I have a 2K1 Se, and have a warpspeed Y on it. Should I go 2.25 or 2.5" tubing? Will be using mandrel bent, with a perforated core resonator. I am not sure if I want to keep stock muffler and mandrel bend up to it, or go mandrel bend, and aftermarket one. I would like to go with a perforated core straight thru, but I think that would be obnoxiously loud. I had a couple of thrustmaster muffs on a grand prix, and WOW talk about loud, 10x louder than the rusted out OEM! Any suggestions? I want to make sure exhaust velocity is high, so I was thinking 2.25".
Thanks!

Another issue is crush-bent vs mandrel-bent piping. Once again, I don't think there's much advantage to mandrel-bent pipe unless you're planning to run forced-induction. I installed mandrel-bent pipe because it seemed like the right thing to do at the time. But if I had it to do all over again, I'd probably install 2.5" crush-bent pipe instead.
I like the sound of my Super Turbo quite a bit more than the OEM muffler. There's very little difference between them in terms of noise output. But the Super Turbo tone is about 1/2 an octave lower and a little less raspy-sounding at high rpms. The Super Turbo simply sounds more muscular than the OEM muffler. From the standpoint of performance, they're practically identical.
Hope that helps.
I did the 2.5" mandrel bent Y/B pipes. I had the local muffler shop replace the muffler piece that goes over the rear axel with 2.5" crushed piping. All in all, you don't notice the difference. Just upgrading the piping will help. But I'll warn you, I had to modify my WarpSpeed Y and B-pipes to raise the piping back up under the car in order to clear the braces underneath. The local shop did it in about an hour. They just cut the section where the 2 pipes join together (before the flex section) and inserted a straight piece (at an angle) to raise the flex section back up under the car. Because that piece was inserted, it moved the flex section towards the rear of the car by about 1 inch. So they cut the B-pipe behind the resonator before the bend around the tire well and pulled the pipe back an inch or so. They re-welded everything together and checked it for clearance. They did not use any bent piping in the WarpSpeed pipes, so the mandrel bending was maintained up until the muffler pipe itself. The muffler pipe was crush-bent because there isn't a mandrel bending maching here in town. They just welded a bracket that hooked up to the WarpSpeed B-pipe using screws (just like the factory muffler section did). Then they bent it over the axel and down to the muffler, where they welded it straight onto the muffler.
The only downside about using the 2.5" piping is where the pipe goes over the rear axel. There isn't much clearance on the driver's side of the hole, so when you go around hard-right turns, you may hear a knocking sound. They said that there wasn't really a place to weld in a hanger to help prevent the sound, as the original piping was only 2" versus the new 2.5".
I hope this helps in your adventures. Just keep in mind that when you upgrade your piping from the Cat back, you'll probably end up modifying the Y pipe like I did in order to get the clearance that you'll need over the under-car braces.
