car hugs road too much, why?

whenever i drive on the highway or any street that trucks frequently drive on, my car tends to ride in their path, or you can say it rides the crowns in the road. i would have to fight the steering wheel to keep my car from trailing off in the grooves of the road.

Now, is this because of the width of my rims which are 17X8, OR is it because of the tires/tread pattern that are on my tires? (sumitomo HTR Z)

I remember someone saying something about the toe-in. A full alignment should correct this I think. I have the same thing too.

This is pretty much to be expected in any car. Think of your tires as bowling ***** and the 'crowns/dips' and alley gutters. Once in, rolling objects tend to go where they are 'tracked', like a hotwheels car and track. Wider tires only exaggerate this condition.

Depending on how close you're following a vehicle at highway speeds, wind displacement from the vehicle in front of you is a factor.

They go in that many directions? Most of what I encounter are long (like 2+ mile long) stretches of this 'valleying' of the road but they are pretty straight. Biggest problem I have with them is a bit of tracking but a bunch of standing water so I have to actually drive on the 'tops' of the crowns, usually meaning the drivers tires are on the lane markers. Thankfully little traffic on these roads when I am on them.

well, not swerving left to right constantly, but it takes work to keep the car straight... the wider tires look nicer then the stock skinny wheels, but fighting the wheel to make the car go straight is getting annoying, it makes driving less fun when you can't just cruise and relax.

NYC roads suck!

My vote is with the width. On my old T/A I had 275's and it did it worse than any car I've evern owned. The wider the tire, the worse the feeling. Meanwhile, with skinny tires it wasn't as noticeable.

I've been on 205s (stock), 245s (on my tantrums), and 225 (on my SE alloys) and I did notice that the 245s tended to find their own ways to get along the road, like they were posessed or something. Funny, i always thought it was just me going crazy.

The tradeoff is better hookup and less torque steer.
