How difficult is it to change the fuel filter?

I just picked up my 2000 Maxima from the dealer for some service. I asked them to replace the fuel filter (recommended in the maintenance manual). When I picked up the car, the tech said he could not replace the filter because it is in the gas tank. I'm not sure what to make of this. I thought replacing the filter is a common thing to do on a periodic basis. Anyone know:

1. Is it recommended to change the fuel filter on 2k maximas?
2. Where is it and how difficult is it to change it?

Thanks in advance.

keep going to this dealer. they told you the truth and didnt just act like they changed it and then charge. the fuel filter is in the tank and its considered by nissan to be an item that never needs changing. the 4th gens had it under the hood, i dont know why ours is in the tank but it is. i have not heard of any 5th gens having to change it but i would bet as some get closer to 100k that some may have it done. to change it, you would have to drop the tank.

you don't have to drop the tank... You need to remove the bottom cushion of the back seat and then pull out the entire fuel pump assembly... the filter is part of that.
