Before my cousin turned 16 she already had a 2 year old Ford Mustang waiting for her (birthday present)....so as soon as she got her drivers' license she drove that for a couple of months...then, in the winter, (with the rear wheel drive and not really knowing how to drive) she crashed into some light pole... her parents wanted that to be a lesson (they told her not to drive that night when she crashed it, but she still drove) and didn't fix the car for a couple of months (so she didn't anything for that period of time).....well, after they did fix it she drove it for about half a year and got bored with it and wanted another car....so her dad gave her his 2 year old Infinity I30t (a sweet car---basically decked out Maxima)....that car lasted her for a year....before she turned 18 she wanted another car, so her parents got her a brand spanking new and fully loaded Pathfinder (for like $37K)......so she's 3 cars in 2 years before her 18th birthday.....That's pretty spoiled in my book...
alright, I'm gonna stop ranting about this...
as far as myself, I drive a stinking small Corolla that I took from my mom after her lease ended (I extended her lease for a half a year)...so I'm looking for a bigger car and am thinking about getting a used 5th gen Maxima---that's why I was on this forum in the first place....

As a former spoiled rotten kid. I can only say that you appreciate a vehicle a lot more when you actually pay for it. I have always taken great care of my vehicles. The ones that I paid for myself are the ones that I feel the best about. How can you say anything when your parents paid for your car and your insurance for you? "nice car... thanks, tell that to the person that paid for it..."

My friend who is 18 like myself had his own Ford Focus at 16, tricked out paid for by dad. In his spare time he drives the family 2k3 Range Rover, and on special occasions he drives his father's Merc SL55 AMG. And he's getting a fully loaded 2k4 Max in 2 months (waiting list).
I've had my 2k Max for a year, it 'belongs' to my dad, but he doesn't drive it, so it's pretty much mine.

simply getting a car from your parents doesnt make you spoiled. getting a car from your parents and not appreciating it and not realizing how lucky you are is spoiled.

being spoiled is an attitude characteristic, not a measure of possessions. you can have two 16 year olds who both drive BMWs. one could have a job and appreciate his parents and one could ask daddy for money all the time and complain on his 16th birthday when he gets a black BMW instead of a blue BMW. one is spoiled and one is just a kid who is lucky to have wealthy parents.

I'm 21 and I bought my car a little over a year ago. I was 20 and did not need a cosigner because I had perfect credit. I'm making the payments and it's insured under my name. Because of this car, I don't have a lot of extra money for clothes, eating out, clubbin, beer..etc.

And... these are the days where the young(er) generation has more disposable income than ever before.
My first car at 16 yrs of age was a 1977 Chevy Malibu... a beast, but fun to drive (REAR WHEEL DRIVE!). Back then, though... the minimum wage was only $3.50 an hour, and the latest computer was the Apple IIe or the Radio Shack TSR80. Ford had the Escort EXP, Honda had just released the Civic CSi, and the F-Body cars ruled the road.
It is also a question I always wonder... how does a 16-yr-old afford a car like the Max?

My parents bought me a new car in 1983 (I was 16). I was so ecstatic. Went to high school in an affluent district, and grew up in what I later realized was an upper middle class household. What did Mom and Dad buy me? A BMW? Camaro? Porsche? Mustang? Corvette?
A 1983 Chevrolet Chevette CS 4 door (at least it wasn't a Citation!). Two tone silver and grey. It was a top of the line Chevette (didn't know there was one, did'ya?)
I NEVER felt embarassed by it and it actually was a good little commuter. The rule... I paid for all upkeep and insurance. The first new car I bought myself (second year in college) was a 1986 Dodge Omni GLH. Milk of Magnesia Blue and Silver. Awesome. But after 3 years it began to somewhat self destruct.
Got a kick out of the 80's flashback. I remember the TRS80's in computer class, and the Apple in my bedroom held data on a cassette. I also had to learn FORTRAN while at the U of I. Flowcharts up the wazoo... and all for nuthin'!
BTW... I think that maybe some of these kids are full of (wishful thinking), or living vicariously through someone else.
And if these spoiled brats aren't... BFD!

Talk about 80's flashback... I used to own an 88/80 that had to boot up by floppy! Remember when 2Mb of storage was, like, soooo much memory? LOL. I remember when I thought I was cool when I completed my first program in BASIC (and it worked!).
I had to take FORTRAN in college (1992)... yikes.
Another friend of mine had a 1973 Dodge Dart... the friggin thing would not die. It was rusted through the floorboards, you could see the road while driving... the doors were held on by bungie cords (the handles had rusted off), he didn't change the oil much, but the engine still turned over and it ran just fine. Those were the days...
