Help me kick my cousins WRX loving ***!
OK, so get this....my cousin is getting a WRX, and he thinks that he will KILL my 2000 auto SE. My max is all stock, so how would it match up with him? I know he might take me, but not by much.
But get this...he is taking his WRX a bit too seriously(and he knows NOTHING about cars)! According to him, a stock WRX runs 0-60 in 5.5, and he says that his WRX is gonna be faster than an M3, Camaro's, and Trans Am's!!!
Now, I just cant take his crap...how will I match up, and what can I get to kick his ***?

His car is an auto so I would see him losing to the WRX, but does the tables turn if it’s a 2k3 6 speed.? I test drove a WRX before I brought my car and I was not all that impress. I can’t see a 2k3 losing to a stock WRX. Dont know could be wrong.

You will not catch a stock WRX 5spd if you are a stock auto 00-01 but you can make it close. However, the 5spd will give a stock WRX a good run if not be dead even. The 02 auto/6spd will catch the WRX on top end and pass like nothing. The WRX lacks top end due to the gearing. I can trap 136mph in my 4th gear, this doesn't even include me using my 5th gear (OD). A stock WRX traps 93-94mph stock in 1320 - Let alone I trap 116mph right now w/o using my Methanol spray and running only 16psi.
All it takes is a MBC on a WRX to run mid 13's. With just a MBC, a WRX will trap around 97-98mph. That is will be a little harder for a stock 02 to catch on top end but it will be pretty evenly faired. A good race would be a 02 6spd with I/E (Kinda liek what Ethan has) racing a WRX with MBC & Exhaust. Both trap around 100-102mph.
Your best bet is to race him from either a roll or do a highway pull. Take away his strength, the launch. The WRX loves the AWD and shooting out of the hole.
This is no way in a flame but I was a previous Maxima owner for 7 years now and I would say I have a good idea of what a Maxima can do.
I also own a WRX so I can do some pretty well comparisons.

Stock for stock the WRX is a dog on the highway. You may be able to take him there, but off the line he'll clobber you. Modified he'll obliterate you anywhere pretty easily. I had a modified WRX putting down 311.5 Hp at all 4 wheels on 92 octane. Nothing substantial done. About 4 second 0-60 and low 12's in the quarter. Here's the link to the dyno chart since this stupid web board won't let me link pictures for some reason.

The blue line is the stock WRX chart and as you can see it really does die out at high RPM. On the highway with the long gearing on the WRX, this gives you the advantage although not too much of one.

i have a friend with a WRX all he has is like an intake and maybe one or to bolt ons an i have see him walk on a new SS camaro. im sure he can take an m3 i took a newer m3 in my camaro and it is just a Z28 with headers exhaust and intake. but i still think the max will take it
There's a possibilty that you could beat a WRX...not a likely one, per se, but there's a chance. Yes, Car and Driver ran a 5.5 0-60 with one, but with their long term tester they only ran a 5.9, so there can be significant differences from car to car. That's still faster than a stock Maxima, but you have to realize that these are professional drivers and from what you said, it doesnt sound like your friend is. To get a decent time out of a WRX you have to launch the thing at 5200 rpm's and a lot of people dont want to do that to their own car. If they dont launch that agressively they'll bog and will be running mid 15's...I've seen it at the track a bunch of times.
Bottom line...will you beat him, stock for stock? Probably not. But I'm not going to sit here and tell you that you have absolutely no chance in the world. Trying throwing a 50 shot of nitrous on there and see what happens.

I'm confused. You're saying the WRX (with one or two bolt ons) took the SS Camaro.
Your Z28 Camaro (with the simple mods) took a E46 M3.
And you're saying the Max will take the WRX when we all know a stock Max can't come close to an E46 M3 (the only stock Maximas that have tried were the ones that just wanted to have a laugh and see a nice car punch it). (I know I managed to get an M5 to "race" to have a laugh.)
Unless of course you mean the Max will take it [up the ****].
In that case, I agree

But then again, the WRX was (originally) purpose built for rally racing which means short gearing for quick acceleration rather than gearing for high topend.
Peace
trust me he will pull on you off the line. my car is stock too! well only a K&N filter for goood measure. In stick light to light he have you no doubt about it. thier automagic is a little slower but that damm awd helps them a lot. the reason is that off the line our wheel spin give them a chance to get ahead... and by the way i have races both stick a auto... stick = no chance. auto = neck and neck...
The auto WRX's are dogs compared to the 5-spd versions. Since they can't tack their car up to 5500-rpm from the line, they can't launch very hard (unless modified with a TC and more power). I think from a stop you two will be very even, and from a roll you should pull away.
GR8MAX,
who cares how much hp/liter there is? That is a ricer statement, and has no bearing on who would win a race. I don't care if a car has 1000-hp/liter if the engine is only .01 liters (10-hp). All that matters (basically) is how much power the car has, not the displacement of the engine.
Also comparing a FI engine to NA is apples to oranges when looking at power/liter.

An auto WRX? An auto Maxima is one thing, but an auto WRX? I hope your friend didn't buy it yet. If so, tell him to get the stick or he'll regret it.

He won't be beating any camaro v8s or trans ams' unless he ups the boost quite a bit. As for your car, he'll probably beat you by at least a second in the 1/4 mile, so if you want to actually win some races against him you better be prepared to go with some sort of forced induction.
Just by adding a boost controller and boosting a little more, he'll be in the 13's stock with no engine modification, just boost controller.... Watch out an beware, the WRX is no sleeper, its fast as hellz if tuned right...

look it's really simple
if he truly doesn't know anything about cars and he's going off mag numbers then just race him from a stop and stomp on it.
most likely he'll mess up his launch and bog his AWD and deal with a lot of turbo lag.
I've seen WRX's run mid 15's at the track simply because the owners have no idea how to launch them.
If you lose that then offer to race him from a 70mph roll to 100, make sure you have your OD off and just pray
haha i just read that it's an auto.
If there's an auto tranny that's worse than the maximas it's the WRX auto tranny. Everything i've heard about the auto WRX's says that they're complete DOGS. Definitely worth a shot, he may be in for an unpleasant surprise

I own a wrx now, got rid of the max due to a wreck. Just to give you an idea some stock wrx's have done 13.9's. Yes a wrx is a little slow on the freeway because fourth gear sucks. If you race one from 95 mph plus it will be close, but under that and you don't have a chance. I raced a 2003 cobra from 45mph to 60 mph and he didn't pull on me, 60mph to 90mph he had 2 cars on me and was slightly pulling way. I'm at Turboxs Stage 2 now and most with this setup run 13.3-13.7 at the track. I'm not that fast yet because I need to work on my launch.

by the WRX. With AWD their rockets off the line especially if he's stick.
