carjacks... not the illegal kind

I was just wondering what everyone used to hoist up their car for oil changes, car rotations and the like. I've seen a bunch at sears, Pep boys, but i'm not sure what brand i should get. Also, this may be dumb but with the jacks and stands, can you jack one side up put the stand underneath, and then jack the other side up with the car on one stand... or is this just plain dangerous. To me it would seem so, but i wouldn't know any other way to jack the car up without damaging the undercarraige. I'm new at the automotive self-service care.

Just about any jack rated at 2500 lbs or higher would suffice. If you want to be really safe got for one 3000 lbs or higher. And yes you can jack one side of the car up, insert jack stand, then jack the other side of the car up. What I usually do when I change the oil, is jack one side of the car up, put two jack stands under it and leave the jack on that side too. That way there is almost zero chance anything will happen.

You can get a jack kit that has a hydraulic jack, two jack stands and two roll-back stops for $39.99 at Wal Mart.
