Hey Guys, I know alot of you have performance exhaust systems on your Maximas i.e.......cat backs, y pipes, etc....,but do any of you have just the muffler with a tip????? I called Stillen today and they want $550 dollars for their rear section only!!!!! Ive seen in many performance magazines that there are universal mufflers on the market that will probably fit a 2000 Max for about $200 dollars. Do any of you have these? If so, what kind? I dont want anything overly loud, but i would like some gain in HP and a lil bit of an exhaust note. Thanks for your help!!!!

An aftermarket muffler on the 5th gen Maxima will do nothing but make noise. The stock muffler is very well engineered and probably will give you more power than most of the aftermarket mufflers out there.

I've been through several iterations of exhaust systems on my Max. If I had it to do all over again, I would have started by simply removing the stock resonator and replacing it with a piece of straight through pipe. That will probably cost you all of about $30.00. If you don't like the way it sounds, you can always put the resonator back on and you'll still be out very little money.

Replacing your stock muffler alone will not give you any increase in hp. The only reason to replace it with an aftermarket muffler is if you want even more of an exhaust note than you'll get by removing the resonator.

Try it. You'll like it.

$550 for just the muffler?! Damm! How much were they asking for the whole system then?

So is this $30 pipe you are talking about the same as the b pipe? Would anyone make a pipe for that cheap?

No. A B-pipe connects the catalytic converter to the rear section. It may or may not contain a resonator. My recommendation involves removing the resonator from the stock B-pipe.

i have tips welded onto my stock muffler.. i say if you aren't after the increase in power but want a deep tone coming from your exhaust get any universal muffler that u like. i personally think dual n'1 from apex wouldn't look too bad on a max.. or just a single one would be cool too tilted slightly to the side.

I have a performance muffler from Arospeed on my 4th gen max..it looks great and sounds great..you wont really get any performance gain from just the muffler but it sure does look nice. I got it for under $200 . If you are in the NJ/NY area email me and I can hook you up with a good deal.

I'm also in So. Cal., Dave. One nice thing about living here is you don't need to use stainless steel in your exhaust system . . . except for looks, that is!

I've tried a couple of different mufflers. The first was a Dynomax Super Turbo (chambered design). The Dynomax was practically as quiet as the stock muffler. The next muffler I tried was a 24" Magnaflow (straight-through design). That's what I'm running now on my catback system. It sounds strong, not ricey, but it drones a little at low rpms (<2500 rpm). It's not obnoxious, however, and at cruising speeds (>2500 rpm) it's all but unnoticeable. In combination with the Stillen Intake, my car sounds mean as hell at WOT!

Thanks for the reply y2kse! I recently went to a muffler shop in Glendale, and if I remember correctly, I believe the Magnaflow muffler was the one the owner was telling me about. He said it would run about $230 installed, including a flange. Where in socal are you y2kse? IM in Burbank. If you are ever in this area, I would love to hear what your car sounds like.

Check your e-mail Dave.

GOOD LORD! $230.00 installed for a Magnaflow muffler is HIGHWAY ROBBERY! Call Mike at Mike's Mufflers in El Monte and get a quote. He installed a complete mandrel-bent catback system in my Maxima including a 24" Magnaflow muffler for $275.00! (The stainless steel tip was extra.)

Mike does excellent work. He can be reached at 626-443-5139.

Ain't no big deal, jkiMaX00. Just find a local muffler shop and tell them you want them to remove the stock resonator. It should take them about 10 minutes to cut it out and weld a piece of pipe in its place. And it shouldn't cost you more than $30 to $40 to have it done.

Try it. You'll like it.
