Is the sun roof wind visor nessesary? thinking about taking mine off..

Does it really help to keep dirt, debree out of the gears of the sunroof when driving with it open? Or is it just to keep wind out of the cabin of the car?

I want to take mine off because I think it gives a little more sleeker look without it.

Had the dealer take mine off when I bought it. No dust or noise issues. The sunroof has it's own wind deflector which raises when opened.

Most people have had problems with the deflector chipping their paint and cracking. My salesman said DON'T GET IT! I didn't

I trying removing it but it had damaged my paint. It had a bunch of tiny scratches from the defector moving around , so it went back on right away.

Quick... Take it off before it RUINS your paint !!!!

I made the mistake of leaving it on for just two months, and it was too late!!!!

Keeps the cabin quieter at highway speeds w/ the sunroof closed and cuts draft when it is open. It also helps keep stuff from flyin in when the roodf is open and protects the glass from being hit by somethin flyin over the car when closed. U can remove it, as the car doesnt come w/it from the factory.

Hmmm, crazy as it sounds...I kinda like the way it looks with the deflector. I was going to order one for my 2k before I got my 2k3 that came with one. I notice a difference in wind noise, it's a little quieter with it on when you have the roof open. So most of you guys think I should take it off? The car is less than a week old.

I took mine off too, but because the screws attaching it were too long and were tearing the rubber around the glass.

I bought a stick-on ventshade visor and I like it. Keeps the wind noise and wind down when open and it is definitely attached solidly.

If it didn't damage my paint, I would have had a blast smashing it into pieces but now I have to keep it on.

Perfect.... you might still have undamaged finish!!

I guarantee you if you wait a year, and you remove the visor, your paint will be worn to the bare matal... That's what happened to my old VW GTI, and then I had no choice but to keep it on (as I could see the rust brewing in between ). You think I would have learned my lesson before I let my New MAX get all scratched up.

Its not that much louder without it... Besides you'll let more light in.

If you think you can take a key to your roof, and not mind the damage... then by all means leave it on.

Wow, thanks guys! I just went downstairs and took mine off. Like I said, the car is less than a week old with 70 miles on it and I can't believe how much dirt and stuff was between the roof of the car and the lip of the deflector already! I can just imagine what it would have looked like once that thing started moving around a little bit. But I got it off in time...the paint is undamaged.

A lot of crap gets stuck under the deflector...stuff not even hand washing can get out....

your absolutely right, the car's profile and front view look sleeker without it....

I was contemplating getting the deflector as well, but through the VERY good advice of fellow .org'ers, I declined. Let me tell you--the noise level is not even that high, so I definitely do NOT regret my decision. Keep in mind that the sunroof has a built-in deflector that opens up when the roof is open.

I would advise anyone against getting one.

Unless they changed the installation since 2k1, you unscrew the visor then slip the mounting clips/brakets from the lip of the roof cutout.

Exactly. I took the deflector off my 2k3 last night, it took 5 minutes. Hold the nut under the visor and unscrew the screw from the top. Once you get both screws out the visor is off. The 2 brackets come right out and there was 2 clear rubber things under them that peeled right off. That's it.
