Why 10w40? Nissan "prefers" 5w30. Are you in a warmer climate?

I run synthetic and plan to change both oil and filter at 5,000, but the oil could probably go longer.

10w40 will provide no better wear protection over 5w30. Stick with what Nissan recommends.

What are you trying to say here? We're asking 'why 10w40?' and your answer doesn't make sense.

The advice given still does, though

ok.... synth 5w30, conventional wisdom is you can switch to synth at your mileage. I'm using mobil 1 and changing oil and filter at 5k miles. That might be conservative but that's what I'm doing.

Nissan recommends 5W-30 because that's the weight oil they used when they were designing the engine and that way you'll get the best performance out of your engine. I use 5W-30.

Synthetic 0W-30 and 5W-30 are what I would look at in this engine. 10W-30 would be okay as well. 10W-40 is not necessary at all and should be avoided.

Depends on the climate. In Arizona, I only use 10w30. 5w30 would be okay, but 10w30 is better for higher temps.
