Anybody doing any better than 28+ mpg in mixed driving?

Anybody have the same setup as mine?

I drive 20/80 for city/highway. This is typical.

throw some experiences out there, and maybe we can get to the bottom of this.
City driving to me is a mix of 60% freeway,20% traffic(off and on the gas) and 20% street (light to light). With a majority of Highway driving my 3.5 still drink.

none of your cars drink.. I had a 5.9 Grand Cherokee. that thing averaged about 12 miles to the gallon. That wash with little city driving. And when I say I city drive, I'm talking 1-2 hours of stop and go 10mph traffic. Than maybe a few sprints to 40. That's for about 60% of driving, the rest is relatively stop and go at 30mmph.

For the 'boston bad gas' crowd, I live in NH so we're using the same gas. That receipt was for July but I've been getting the same results all winter, too (except for the few weeks following my injen install, but that's completely "self-inflicted bad mileage" if you know what I mean )

I did a very unscientific test... babied the gas for a tank and got about 450 miles. Romped on it to about 5k rpm about 10 times on the next tank and got about 350 miles. VERY unscientific findings??? Really mashing the gas once loses about 10 miles per tank.

If all you're doing is city, expect your mileage to suck.

Well at least we all know where we stand here, are cars use a lot of gas, probably having something to do with it being a high compression engine also. I can't belive how far off my on dash MPG is. It claims i'm getting 22 MPG and i'm getting 15.9.

do the rough math on mine (160 miles on 3/4 tank), and you get just over 12 mpg....

The majority of my driving is my "commute" to work and back - something like 8 miles each way, on back roads and through neighborhoods. Lots of stop signs and traffic lights - my average speed when I've only being doing this is something like 18 mph.

I will say it's been a while since I had that really bad 15 mpg tank though - maybe as the car's going through break-in things are going better. Average about 17 or 18 mpg now, and got 26 on a long highway drive with the cruise set at 88.

Well in your posts you don't say how you drive the car, what your main driving is hwy/cty, if your in a auto or manual, and if you let the car warm up in the morning.

With out that info all I can say is the higher you go over 3000rpms the more the car sucks the gas down. The 3.5 Max gets it's best MPG at 70-80 MPH. The best I've got is 504 miles on 17.3 gallons all hwy. The worst I've got is 302 miles on 17.5 gallons all city and romping it often.

If you've got a 6spd shift at or under 3k rpms, you can also drive the car in 6th at 1.5k or less with no problem. If you have an auto lighten your foot some

Bro, I've done this multiple times, and have not broken 17-18mpg. I even shift at 2K rpms, and drive in 6th at 1.5 or less, and still no major improvement.

Do you down shift and engine brake or do you pop it out of gear and coast to the light?

I usually just leave it in the gear I'm in, and coast down to the light. Once the revs drop real low, I'll pop it into neutral. If I'm approaching a light at slow speed, I'll pop it into neutral right away, and coast the rest of the way. It's just that when I'm going fast, I don't want to coast in neutral to the light.

I leave it in neutral as much as possible, given the circumstances.

And I don't downshift to engine brake to minimize wear on clutch.

Hey guys, I just realized something from a different thread (the ECON button on HVAC post). I've been driving with the windshield defrost button on, which means that the climate control is set to AUTO. I was previously under the impression that AUTO will turn the A/C compressor on only when necessary, but after reading that thread, seems like it's constantly running the compressor.

So, perhaps this is the reason why I'm having poor mileage. I'm going to play around with the HVAC and see what happens. Perhaps some of you with the auto climate control need to do the same.

Well when you leave it in gear even if you don't down shift your still engine braking. The way I see it is if the light is red I'm coasting, if there's a stop sign ahead I'm coasting, if I see trafic slowing ahead I'm coasting, if I'm going down hill usually I'm coasting. Get the picture.
I've driven that way for 20+ years. In my 99' I didn't need to change my pads till I had 32k on the car. Also I don't consider myself a slow driver, I'm usually giong at least 10 over on surface streets and 20-25 over on the hwy. Here in Atlanta thats just keeping up with traffic

Ok, maybe I made it sound like I do more engine braking than coasting, whereas in reality, I would say I coast more than engine brake. In other words, I use neutral more to approach lights, stop signs, traffic, etc, more than leaving the car in gear.

However, if you see my post above, I think I've figured out my reason for poor mileage (i.e. "improper" use of the HVAC controls).

i've been getting better mileage now-a-days. last few fill-ups are 24.0 mpg and 23.7 mpg with mostly freeway (but heavy stop and go traffic) driving. i just added k&n filter, so i'll see if i get even better mileage at next fill-up.

OK... just did an accurate check... driving conservatively...
Got 351 miles before gas light came on. Milage was 22.3 mpg. 50/50 highway city.
I'll do it again driving spirited (not beating on it though) and will see what it costs me to play a little... stay tuned

how many gallons to refill it? I bet you put in over 3 so that would have been another 60 miles... over 400 miles on a tank.

vito1281, I get what that jpg shows and I always have it set to AUTO.
