The TSB has been updated as of Dec 4, 2000. I hold in my hands a fresh copy printed from the dealer. It says vehicles made before 9/28/2000 may be effected. It even lists vins. Also there have apparently been two revisions to the TCM so the service manager did order me a new one. The TCM is no longer the first service item suggested. If someone has access to a scanner and a fax machine I'll fax them a copy. Otherwise I can fax it to my efax account and post a link to that doc.

Re:TSB

Thanks for posting this.

By the way, did you notice the first and last steps of the valve replacement?
"Record the radio presets" and "Re-program all radio presets"

Has anyone ever known a service center to do this?!

Before plenty of conversation with punkdork (thanks for being so patient with my loads of questions!) I thought I was in the clear. I got rid of my 2001 GXE when I had tranny trouble and luckily got into an SE for cheaper, with no loss of money (Nissan traded it off for me). Now that I thought I was all set, no tranny trouble, new car, etc, I hear about all of this TSB crap for the tranny. I thought my car might have cleared the manufacture date but it didn't So naturally, my neurosis put me right on the phone with the local dealers. Two out of three already know about it and have ordered the parts. I don't have the trouble (yet) with my tranny, but one dealer said he'll change the TCM and solenoid, the other said call tomorrow, and the other said I have to bring the car in with no other info. So if any of you have the models at hand and DON'T have any trouble yet, apparently the dealers know about it and are willing to get it done before the problems...so get it done before it breaks or gets worse!

Thanks PUNK! hah hah

Punkdork, Paul2kGXE, thanks for posting the TSB....I just checked my VIN and doesnt seem to be included in the TSB. My VIN goes JN1CA31A6Y******* . This does mean that my car was after the stated VIN's right? If so, thats cool...just hope that I don't have any tranny problems later on....Thanks for your help....

All of this TCM stuff is making me scared. I don't think my transmission is sliping but then again, my uncles car shifts the same way and his was built the same date as mine. Makes me wonder if I should go to the dealer now. I have about 13,000miles and from what I've heard, adding a new TCM will screw up your shifts if its added on late.

The service manager at Melody's Nissan in Bellevue made it sound like the solenoids are the problems. The TCMs have also been updated twice however so he's doing that for me. If you are worried about your tranny and your car fits the bill try and find a dealer who will do your solenoid and tcm.

So

does this mean if we already have replaced the TCM way back when that it did absolutely no good? All that fighting, blood, sweat and tears went for waste?

Jeez...I don't think I have the patience to go through that circus event again.....

It sounds like even if we got the newer TCM way back when that out trannys might look like mush in the pans like Punks?

Any of you plan on having the dealer check on this?

Gee what another wonderful suprise for a flagship...heheheheh...aaaaaggghhh...

btw Thanks Punk and Paul!!

Woah, Yikes. This problem has me freaked.
How do I check the cars at the dealer to make sure I get one manufactured after the problem was corrected and what is the date? Thanks

I don't understand the vin numbering system. I do know that you got your car way before sept 28th so it could VERY easily fit into the problem area. Did you get the VB recal done? If so I hope your tranny doesn't end up needing replacement.

Did they just replace the TCM? If so, do you still feel slippage? If so you may have a faulty solenoid or possibly tranny damage.

Yup, got the VB recal and TCM done... no slipping at all for me, but I want to fix it if possible.

see my thread

I saw the same TSB at the dealer today. He let me look at the TSB, in full color I might add, after the service manager said there is now way to find out what part # TCM I have in my Max.

I really am scared to have his procedure done!

not true...

your SM can see the TCM # on the diag tool they plug in. it takes about 5 mins for them to find out... and only 15 mins to replace should you need it...

Thanks very much......

Punkdork for getting the TSB and sharing the information on a problem that has effected many of us with auto-trans. Like I said before this forum is the best, and thanks again.

how do I tell

If my car is affected? It was manufactured in 08/00 but the VIN is 17 digits, not 16 as stated in the TSB. Should I just drop the middle digit from my VIN that is different from the rest of the VINS mentioned? If my number is lower than those in the TSB does it mean I could have the problem?

Thanks for the info.

VIN #'s

My car was built during the affected period. (Built before September 28, 2000) My car shows it was built 9/99. Side note: Any way to tell what date exactly? I'm trying to figure out the VIN seqences affected. My VIN is JN1CA31D3YT734xxx. Does that fall under the TSB? It looks like it does. (If you drop the Y in the middle)

The TSB affects cars built before these VINs:

JN1CA31D1T611588
JN1CA31D1T810486
JN1CA31A1T304774
JN1CA31A1T104438

Re: how do I tell

Mike

I just noticed that I have 17 too. It looks like on mine, I should drop the Y. I'm fairly certain mine is affected by the TSB.

Normal wear and tear of the tranny will leave bits of metal on the magnet on the tranny pan. If you undo yours (assuming you don't have this problem), you'll find the bits also.

When Don in Texas took off my tranny pan, I noticed metal bits, but it wasn't bad. He took off Jane's, and her's was full of metal.

Do those VIN apply to the veichles in the States only? Or is it for all maximas including Canadian models? My car was build in 4/99 and I definately feel the slippage in every 1-2 shifts. My car's VIN is JN1CA31A9YT00xxxx and I am not really sure is my car effected. Also, anyone have a Canadian version of this TSB? Thanks a lot.
